This is a game in which both teams could really use two points. It is getting grim for the Predators early in the season, as they have the second-fewest points in the NHL. They enter this game winless in their last five games, recording just one victory in their latest nine contests.

The Penguins had a great start to the season. But they are limping a little bit entering this contest. Pittsburgh has one win in its last four games and has not had consecutive wins in three weeks. The Penguins are in a good spot through 17 games in their division and conference, but they do not want to let this slump deepen.

The Penguins are the slight favourites in this game, but there is intrigue added to this one as it is being played in Stockholm, Sweden, as part of the NHL’s Global Series. Pittsburgh is 8-1-1 against Nashville in their previous 10 meetings, and the Preds are just 1-4-2 away from home ice this season.

Neutral-site international games in all sports tend to produce atypical results. In other words, anything can happen. Who knows? Maybe the Predators needed something like an international trip to return to winning ways. The same could be said for the Penguins. Both teams will be eager to turn their downward trend around.

The silver lining to the Penguins’ current losing streak is that their losses were to strong opponents. Winnipeg beat up on Pittsburgh, but the following defeats were by a goal each to Toronto, New Jersey in overtime, and Los Angeles. 

It has been a run of challenging opponents for the Penguins. It is not like they are getting run out of the building or by inferior opponents. The Predators come at a good time in the schedule as they present a get-right spot for the Penguins. Pittsburgh should bring a good effort into this one.

The Predators spent all of last season looking for answers, as their roster was stellar on paper but did not yield any results. Things do not look any different thus far this season. There are already whispers of selling assets and beginning rebuilding. 

While the NHL is a league in which truly any team can beat any team on any given night, the Preds are just a tough betting play at the moment. They can’t be relied on, regardless of their opponent, and are a much easier fade. They really need to show some life in this one if they’re going to turn things around.

Until or unless things change in Nashville, they are a comfortable fade. That is especially the case against opponents that are either in better form or just more talented. Maybe the season will prove later on that Pittsburgh isn’t the better team. But for now, the Penguins have looked phenomenal so far, and this is a good get-right spot for them.

Based on early-season returns and what looks to be the feeling in the Predators locker room, they are too tough to take. Even if they get a jolt from the international game and all that comes with it. Expect a 4-2 Penguins win.
