Currently trailing Detroit by five points in the hunt for the second wild card in the Eastern Conference, the Rangers escaped with a 3-2 win over Boston on Wednesday night to extend their current win streak to two games but have failed to win three in a row since mid-November. The Penguins open a two-game road trip on Broadway after falling 3-2 to New Jersey on Tuesday night and have work to do to resuscitate their playoff hopes after posting losses in 12 of their past 17 contests.

The Rangers lead the way as -210 favourites on the Friday NHL odds and sport +125 odds on the NHL puckline. The Penguins trail as +170 underdogs, and the total is pegged at 6.0.

Penguins vs. Rangers NHL Betting Odds

Friday’s clash at Madison Square Garden marks the third of four regular season meetings between these Metropolitan Division rivals. The Rangers have dominated while skating to victory in each of their first two dates with Pittsburgh this season, capped by a 4-2 victory at MSG in December.

Overall, the Rangers have held the Penguins to two or fewer goals five times while winning six of their past seven head-to-head including a trio of shutout wins over that stretch. However, New York has battled inconsistency on home ice. The club has allowed just two goals per game while tallying victories in the first two dates on their homestand but allowed nine total goals while losing their previous two home contests and sport a middling 14-11-2 home record this season.

The Penguins have also struggled to generate consistent results. In addition to winning just three of their past 12 road games, Pittsburgh shooters have struggled to find the mark, potting just 1.83 goals per game during their current 2-3-1 run. However, that has generated winnings for NHL betting fans taking the UNDER, which has paid out in each of Pittsburgh’s past five games.

Pittsburgh Penguins

Already struggling to generate offence, the Penguins have seen that task get even harder with the recent loss of Evgeni Malkin to a lower body injury that currently leaves him listed as week-to-week. Further complicating matters in the uncertain status of Sidney Crosby. The Penguins’ superstar captain is enjoying a five-game points streak during which he scored four times and added three assists but twice missed practice this week due to an upper body injury. Crosby did skate alone on Thursday, but sports bettors must prepare for the Team Canada hero to miss Friday’s action.

While the Penguins offence has sputtered, the club has received steady goaltending from Alex Nedeljkovic, who has allowed just six total goals on 103 total shots and compiling a 2-1-1 record while getting the start in the past four games.

New York Rangers

After picking up at least a point in 10 straight games, starting on January 4, the Rangers lost three in a row but now have a chance to claim a desperately needed victory against a depleted opponent. Mika Zibanejad has provided the spark during their 2-0-0 run, scoring once and adding four helpers, ending a dismal five-game drought at home that featured just one total assist.

Artemi Panarin has also remained steady, picking up five points over the past three games and has racked up four goals and four assists over his past five home appearances. JT Miller has enjoyed a solid start in his second stint in the Big Apple. Acquired last week in a deal with Vancouver, Miller has potted a pair of markers and set up two more in his first three outings with the Rangers.
