Pittsburgh Penguins vs. Calgary Flames Prediction, NHL Odds

It’s the second of a four-game western road trip for the Penguins, who began the trip with a 6-3 win at Seattle on Monday. Pittsburgh’s currently holding down third place in the Metropolitan Division with a 23-14-11 record. Calgary’s slipping out of the playoff race in the West, and they’re now indicating it’s another “sell” season after trading away defenceman Rasmus Andersson over the weekend. Calgary fell 2-1 in OT to New Jersey on Monday, which was both Calgary’s first game without Andersson and last game overall.

Wednesday’s puck drop at the Scotiabank Saddledome goes at 9:30 p.m. EST, with the Penguins a -118 moneyline favourite on the road and the over-under at six on the NHL odds.

Penguins vs. Flames NHL Betting Odds

The Penguins are playing good hockey on the road, winning four of their last five away outings. Getting the two points has been a bit of a challenge for them in Calgary though, as Pittsburgh’s come away with just one win in their last five trips to Calgary. The Flames have won 10 of their last 14 home games overall and have been a much different, better team on home ice this year.

Calgary came away with a 2-1 victory over Pittsburgh back on January 10. Despite the low-scoring battle, four of the last five Penguins–Flames clashes have finished over the total. Calgary does typically play to the under though, having five of their last seven overall go under large in part to their 29th-ranked offence that scores 2.55 goals per game.

Pittsburgh Penguins

With two goals on Monday, Connor Dewar became the sixth Penguins skater to reach double-digit goals this season. Dewar’s one of the many unlikely contributors to Pittsburgh’s unforeseen run that has them in a playoff spot approaching 50 games into this season. Defencemen Parker Wotherspoon and Brett Kulak also scored in Monday’s win, adding to the list of unlikely contributors for Pittsburgh. That said, the regulars are still producing at a high level too; Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin continue to play at over a point a game pace. Crosby netted two assists in Monday’s win, which happened to be his 1,400th career game.

Pittsburgh’s rotated the duo of Arturs Silovs and Stuart Skinner in net over their last 16 games, and if the pattern holds on Wednesday it’ll be Silovs’ turn between the pipes. Silovs has played a team-high 22 games this season and is 8-6-8 with an .892 save percentage.

Calgary Flames

The Flames are still searching for answers on offence as a dry January continues. Calgary’s 3-5-1 this month and have yet to score more than four goals in any of those nine contests. In fact, the Flames are averaging 2.1 goals per game this month and have scored exactly one goal in four of those five defeats. Matt Coronato and Blake Coleman lead the way with 13 goals each this season, which is not a good sign as Calgary is set to play in game number 50 this season. Both are on pace for just over 20 goals this season, which is currently the bar for this Flames roster.

On a positive note, defenceman Zach Whitecloud made his Flames debut on Monday after being acquired in the Rasmus Andersson trade. Whitecloud logged 22:33 of ice time in the 2-1 loss and should be a key piece of this Calgary backend moving forward.
