The shootout took a total of 17 minutes and 43 seconds and was finally decided by Florida’s Nick Bjugstad on his second shot attempt. He missed the first, but connected on the second to finally put an end to the shootout 6-5. Every skater in the game had an opportunity to shoot with four players getting a second attempt. For the Capitals, this was the second time they were on the losing side of a NHL record breaking shootout, losing to the New York Rangers after a 15 round shootout in 2005.
Those who scored for the Washington Capitals during the record breaking shootout include Alex Ovechkin, Joel Ward, Brooks Orpkin, John Carlson and Brooks Laich. The Panthers saw Dave Bolland, Derek MacKenzie, Dylan Olsen, Sean Bergenheim and Jussi Joinen score shootout goals. The six goals needed to win was also the most ever needed to win a shootout in NHL history.
Prior to the shootout, the Panthers were leading the Capitals 1-0 after a Derek MacKenzie one-timer after the Capitals failed to clear the puck from behind the net cleanly in the first period. Washington would tie the game in the second period when Troy Brouwer would fin d the back of the net on a power play in the second period, beating Panther’s netminder Roberto Luongo on his glove side.
With 3:08 left in the third quarter, it appeared the Capitals took the lead on a puck that slid past Luongo, but the goal was called off after further review due to the puck being kicked into the goal by Laich. The win puts the Panthers at 4-0-1 in their last five home games.
