Florida Panthers vs. Edmonton Oilers Stanley Cup Final Game 2 Prediction, NHL Odds

Edmonton struck first in both the game and the series, winning Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final 4-3 in overtime on Wednesday night.

The Oilers are -130 favourites to win Game 2 on the NHL odds, with the total set at 6.5.

Panthers vs. Oilers NHL Betting Odds

Most people pegged this as a long series and if Game 1 is any indication, those people are right. Wednesday’s result was the fourth straight one-goal game played between the teams, dating to Game 7 of last year’s Stanley Cup Final.

Edmonton enters Game 2 as a -235 favourite to win the Stanley Cup on the NHL futures board, while the Panthers are +190 underdogs. The favoured exact series result is an Oilers win in six games at +350. The biggest long shot is a Florida win in five games at +1300.

If you’re looking for player futures’, Connor McDavid remains a -160 favourite to win the Conn Smythe Trophy. However, after Leon Draisaitl’s two-goal performance in Game 1, the big German has great Conn Smythe value at +450.

Florida Panthers

It was an outlier game for Florida on Wednesday as they held a one-goal lead entering both the second and third periods. It was the first time the team has lost a playoff game when leading after the first or second period in three playoff runs under head coach Paul Maurice. The Panthers were previously 31-0 in such situations.

Sam Bennett had a solid Game 1 performance, scoring twice, while Brad Marchand also found the back of the net. Carter Verhaeghe and Nate Schmidt each had two assists. Bennett leads Florida with 18 points, including a playoff-leading 12 goals.

After making 42 saves you can’t blame Sergei Bobrovsky for the loss, but his numbers haven’t been great for a couple games now. Bobrovsky has allowed seven goals on 69 shots (.899 save percentage) in his last two starts after going eight straight starts allowing two or less goals.

Edmonton Oilers

Leon Draisiatl opened the scoring just 66 seconds into Game 1 and bookended things with the overtime winner on the power play. Mattias Ekholm and Kasperi Kapanen also found the back of the net, while Connor McDavid and Viktor Arvidsson each had two helpers. McDavid and Draisaitl lead the playoffs in scoring with 28 and 27 points, respectively.

The Oilers have proven you can’t count them out at any point. Edmonton leads the NHL with seven comeback wins this postseason and they are tied with Dallas for most third-period comeback wins (four). History is also on the Oilers side as teams that win Game 1 go on to win the Stanley Cup 76.5 per cent of the time (65-20), including each of the past four years.

The biggest question mark entering this series for Edmonton was always going to be Stuart Skinner, but he certainly did his job on Wednesday with 29 saves on 32 shots faced. Skinner has now rolled off five straight wins, allowing just eight goals on 137 shots (.942 SV) in that span.
