Panthers vs. Hurricanes NHL Odds, Prediction and Picks: Carolina Opens as -125 Favourite
The Hurricanes will raise their first Stanley Cup banner in a generation after claiming last year’s crown by topping the Vegas Golden Knights in six games in last season’s Cup Final, while the Panthers look to rebound from a last campaign after making an array of dramatic changes to their lineup during the offseason.
The Hurricanes open their schedule perched as -125 home favourites on Tuesday’s NHL opening night odds. The Panthers trail as +105 underdogs, and the total is listed at 6.5.
Panthers vs. Hurricanes NHL Betting Odds
These clubs met three times last season, with the Panthers claiming a pair of wins. The Hurricanes closed out that three-game set with a convincing 9-0 home victory on January 16, but have failed to post consecutive victories while going 3-6-1 in their past 10 dates with Florida, a run that featured a crushing five-game defeat in the 2025 Eastern Conference Final. In addition to returning to action as defending champions, the Hurricanes also look to build on a 53-win, 113-point campaign last season that featured 29 wins on home ice.
However, it is the Panthers who have emerged as an early +650 favourites on the Stanley Cup odds, ahead of the third-ranked Canes, who are pegged as a +750 bet to repeat. These clubs also sit neck and neck on the odds to win the East, and are heavy chalk to claim their respective divisional crowns, with Florida perched as a +160 bet to win the Atlantic Division following last season’s seventh-place finish, and the Hurricanes pegged as a +110 wager to finish atop the Metropolitan Division.
Florida Panthers
Racked by injuries, the Panthers took a huge step back last season following back-to-back Stanley Cup victories, compiling just 40 wins and 84 points on their way to a seventh-place finish in the Atlantic, well out of playoff contention. Those struggles provided the spark for some wholesale changes in South Florida. Most notably, the club pulled the trigger on a deal to unite the Tkachuk brothers in Florida, acquiring noted pest Brady Tkachuk, who tallied 59 points while being limited to just 60 games last season. Tkachuk enjoyed a solid preseason, potting three goals and five points in a pair of dates with the Canes, and will be aiming to regain the form that generated 83 points and 126 penalty minutes four years ago.
The club also conducted renovations in the crease, dealing for Jacob Markstrom before allowing long-time Florida backstop Sergei Bobrovsky to test free agency and eventually sign with Toronto. The Panthers also adding plenty of veteran experience, most notably bringing back rearguard Radko Gudas, who played a key role in the club’s march to the 2023 Cup Final. Perhaps most important in the return to health of team captain Aleksander Barkov, who missed all last season dure to injury. However, Florida opens the campaign without veteran Brad Marchand, who remains sidelined indefinitely with an undisclosed injury.
Carolina Hurricanes
The Hurricanes did not let their first Stanley Cup win since 2006 stop them from making some hard decisions on reshaping their lineup. Brandon Bussi’s sensational performance in last spring’s Stanley Cup Final, in which he 3-1 with a 1.60 GAA and .931 save percentage, made it easy for the club to part ways with veteran Frederik Andersen, who subsequently signed in Edmonton. Otherwise, Carolina returns with their championship core largely intact, and the NHL futures odds back that decision. In addition to sitting among the favourites on the Stanley Cup odds, the Canes lead the way as +190 chalk to once again emerge as the top playoff seed in the East, and sport -115 odds of compiling OVER 108.5 regular season points for the fifth time in six seasons.
