Florida Panthers vs. Washington Capitals Game 4 Prediction, Playoff Odds

After an impressive regular season, the President’s Trophy-winning Panthers are on the brink of elimination. They have yet to lead in the series and are trying to advance to the second round for the first time since ‘96.

The Panthers are the -186 favourites to win Game 4 on the NHL odds, with a total of 6.5.

The total has been 6.5 in each game of the series so far and Game 3 has been the only one to play the Over. Before the playoffs, eight straight Panthers-Capitals matchups played the Over. Right now, the Over is seeing 89 percent of the betting action.

After scoring a league-leading 4.1 goals per game this season, Florida’s offence has been knocked down to a humble 2.6 average in the postseason. The Panthers are still the favourite but have been knocked down to a  -141 to win the series from -323 heading into Game 3.

Washington finished the regular season with a decent 19-16-6 record at Capital One Arena. In this head-to-head, the home team has won six of the past seven games. Sports Interaction customers are showing the Caps a bit of love on the moneyline tonight with 41 percent taking them to win.

Alex Ovechkin and his right-hand man, Nicklas Backstrom, are leading the series in scoring with four points each (1G, 3A). While on Florida’s side, Carter Verhaeghe has three points (1G, 2A).

Florida Panthers

After Game 2’s 5-1 beating, the Capitals turned to Ilya Samsonov in goal for Game 3. The 25-year-old turned aside 29 shots for his first career NHL playoff win. Combined with his relief efforts in Game 2, he has saved 46 of the 47 shots on goal.

Alex Ovechkin in his office on the powerplay ripped his first of the series giving the Caps a 4-1 lead. His 72nd career playoff goal marked the third straight game that Washington has notched one on the man advantage. Their penalty-killing unit has been even better going a perfect 10-10, shutting down one of the league’s top units.

Washington Capitals

The Panthers got on the board quickly in Game 3, with Jonathan Huberdeau scoring his first of the series just 2:45 into the game. That was all the offence they would muster, being held to two or goals or less for the second time in the series.

After boasting the fifth-highest scoring powerplay in the league ticking at 24% in the regular season, they have zero goals to start the series. They have not been able to stay out of the penalty box themselves, putting the Caps on the powerplay six times last game.

Florida is going to need more from their big guns like Huberdeau, Aleksander Barkov and Claude Giroux who all have just two points.
