We have a Game 6 in the Eastern Conference semifinals that few expected on Friday night when the Florida Panthers try again to finish off the Boston Bruins.

The Cats are -150 road favourites on the NHL odds.

Panthers vs. Bruins NHL Betting Odds

Perhaps we shouldn’t be surprised that this series has been full of twists and turns because that was the case last year in the first round between Florida and Boston when the Panthers rallied from down 3-1 to win in seven. The Bruins are trying to accomplish the same task. When trailing a best-of-7 series 3-2 all-time, Boston is 4-23 in it. In all-time Game 6s at home, the Bruins are 9-9. Florida is 3-2 in a series all-time when leading 3-2. In road Game 6s, the Panthers are 1-3.

On the updated series line, Florida is -700 and Boston +500. The favoured exact result is Panthers in six at -150, followed by in seven at +240 and Bruins in seven at +475. There has yet to be a shutout in the series and that there will not be is -700 with one game +650 and two +3300. This writer is shocked there hasn’t been overtime yet, either. That there will be no such games is -275 with one at +250 and two at +2000.

Florida Panthers

I’m pretty surprised that Florida couldn’t finish things off at home in Game 5 as its three-game winning streak in the series was snapped in a 2-1 loss. Sam Reinhart’s (unassisted) fifth goal of the playoffs tied the game at 1-1 at 6:23 of the second. It was Reinhart’s fourth career goal in a potential clinching game to pass Aleksander Barkov and Bill Lindsay for sole possession of second place on the franchise’s all-time list. Current teammate Carter Verhaeghe leads with six. His 11 points in potential series-clinching games also are a franchise best.

The Panthers were 0-for-4 on the power play and outhit 49-37 as Boston tried to turn up the physicality. Sergei Bobrovsky allowed both goals on 28 shots and has now lost both games in this series when he’s faced more than 20 shots.

Boston Bruins

The Bruins have forced a Game 6 after facing a 3-1 series deficit for the eighth time in franchise history and first since Round 1 in 2017. Boston fell in Game 6 during each series except for two (2009 conference semifinals and 2008 quarters). We thought the Bruins, who are 2-0 in elimination games in these playoffs, might sub out goaltender Jeremy Swayman for Game 5 but not after he vowed the series would return to Boston — and he backed it up with 28 saves. He stoned Florida’s Sam Reinhart from close range with about eight seconds left. Morgan Geekie (fourth of the playoffs) and Charlie McAvoy (first) had the goals, with McAvoy’s the winner at 10:25 of the second. It was his first career goal in a potential elimination game and 10th career point in one (also had an assist on Geekie’s goal), now tied for third in team history for most points in a potential elimination game among defencemen.

The Bruins now own an all-time record of 36-26-1 when scoring first in potential elimination games. Captain Brad Marchand missed his second straight game with an upper-body injury and remains day-to-day.
