Edmonton Oilers vs. New York Rangers Prediction, NHL Odds
The Oilers make their only visit this NHL regular season to the “World’s Most Famous Arena,” Madison Square Garden in New York City, to face the Rangers on Tuesday night. Edmonton is a -140 favourite on the NHL odds with a total of 6.5 goals.
Oilers vs. Rangers NHL Betting Odds
Monday was such a treat around the NHL with a handful of matinee games thanks to holidays in Canada and the U.S., but back to a full night slate on Tuesday with eight games, and this is arguably the marquee matchup. The Oilers and Rangers have never met in the Stanley Cup Final, but it’s not out of the question this could be the matchup come spring.
Edmonton is a +420 favourite to win a third straight Western Conference title, while New York is +1200 to win the East for the first time since 2014. But you can never count out the Rangers because they have one of the world’s top goalies in former Vezina winner Igor Shesterkin. This is the first season as head coach for Mike Sullivan, who was previously a long-time coach in Pittsburgh. You can’t miss the playoffs as Rangers coach and keep your job; they missed last season and Peter Laviolette was canned.
These clubs will wrap up the season series on Oct. 30 at Rogers Place. They had split three straight season series until the Oilers swept last year by a combined score of 9-3. Connor McDavid (3G, 1A) led the way with four points. Stuart Skinner started both in net and stopped 53 shots. Artemin Panarin (2G, 1A) led New York with three points. Shesterkin allowed three goals in his lone start.
The Oilers are 5-1 in their past six as the road team in the series. The total has gone over in six of the past nine overall.
Edmonton Oilers
Edmonton has played only two games thus far, both at home. This starts a five-game trip. The Oilers scored three in each, losing the opener in a shootout to Calgary but beating Vancouver 3-1 on Saturday. Stuart Skinner and Calvin Pickard have each started once in net, and it should be Skinner’s turn here.
Ryan Nugent-Hopkins (1G, 2A), Leon Draisaitl (2G, 1A) and Connor McDavid (3A) lead the club with three points each, while Draisaitl and Andrew Mangiapane are tops with two goals each. Mangiapane marked his 500th career NHL point Saturday with his eventual winner late in the second. Centre Noah Philip played in his 17th career regular-season game and got his first goal.
The Oilers outshot the Canucks 37-15 but were 0-for-5 on the power play. Vancouver had only two PP chances and both were killed off. Edmonton’s penalty kill is at 83.3 per cent.
It appears the Oilers are healthy for Tuesday other than guys already on IR like Zach Hyman. Edmonton is 7-3 in its past 10 road games.
New York Rangers
New York is 2-0 on the road but 0-2 at Madison Square Garden after a 1-0 defeat on Sunday to Washington when Blueshirts backup Jonathan Quick was in net. The Rangers have been blanked in both home games but scored 10 in the two away.
It should be back to Igor Shesterkin on Tuesday, and the Russian is 2-1-0 with a 0.67 GAA and .976 SV. The Rangers are tied for the NHL lead on the penalty kill at 100 per cent but have scuffled some on the power play at 18.2 per cent.
Blueliner and former Norris Trophy winner Adam Fox (3G, 1A) leads the team with four points. Centre Vincent Trocheck and blueliner Carson Soucy are both dealing with injuries and in doubt. Trocheck has played in two games this year after finishing second on the club with 59 points a year ago. The over is 4-1 in New York’s past five vs. a Western Conference foe.
