Consider this two-game set between the Edmonton Oilers and Winnipeg Jets a potential preview of what’s to come because as it stands now, if the playoffs started today these teams would meet in the first round.  The Oilers are fresh off a split in their two-game set with Montreal, while the Jets are looking to snap a three-game losing skid.

This game is a straight pick’em on the moneyline, while Edmonton carries a tempting +209 number on the puckline at -1.5.  The total is set at 6.0 on the NHL odds.

Oilers vs. Jets Betting Analysis

The Oilers have been the better team in this season series with a 4-3 edge in wins.  It’s worth noting, however, that Edmonton’s 3-0 win Over the Jets on April 17 was the first shutout either team has posted against each other this year and also the first game to be decided by more than two goals.

Edmonton is coming into this game looking like a playoff contender.  They’re 4-2 straight up in their last six games overall and 4-1 SU in their last five games against Winnipeg.  They’re 23-22 against the spread this season and have covered in 13 of 22 road games.  Despite having the top two scorers in the NHL, Edmonton’s improved defence has made low scoring games a trend for this team.  The Oilers have been an Under team in seven straight road games and nine of their last 10 games overall.

The Jets have hit a bit of a skid lately and dropped four of their last six games.  They’ve been a great cover option this year though, going 32-15 ATS overall.  They seem to attract high scoring games against Edmonton as six of the last eight games between these teams in Winnipeg have hit the Over.

Edmonton Oilers

With two games in-hand over the Jets and only trailing them by one point in the standings, this two-game set is a great chance for Edmonton to jump into second in the North Division and add some distance in the standings.  The Oilers showed some resiliency after battling back from a 4-1 deficit to Montreal on Wednesday before ultimately falling 4-3.  Connor McDavid continues to blow past even the highest expectations.  He added a goal and two assists against the Habs to his league-leading point total.  The Edmonton superstar has 77 points (25G, 52A) in 45 games.  McDavid’s linemate Leon Draisaitl is No. 2 in league scoring with 64 points (22G, 42A) in 45 games.

Mike Smith was solid between the pipes for Edmonton on Wednesday, stopping 27 shots in the loss.  The veteran goalie has posted a 16-5-2 record with a 2.37 goals-against average and .921 save percentage.  Smith should get the nod again on Monday.  Zach Kassian (leg) will not play Monday, while Jujhar Khaira (upper-body) and Joakim Nygard (hand) are considered questionable.

Winnipeg Jets

The Jets are stumbling at the worst possible time and need two big wins in this two-game set to put some distance between themselves and the Oilers in the standings.  Winnipeg has only managed to score four goals over their last three games, including a 4-1 loss to Toronto on Saturday.  Nikolaj Ehlers was the only Jets player who found the back of the net on Saturday.  Winnipeg’s leading goal scorer, Kyle Connor (22G, 22A), and their leader in points, Mark Scheifele (18G, 36), both failed to record a point against the Leafs.

After getting pulled in the first Toronto game, Connor Hellebuyck’s 33 saves weren’t enough in the second game.  Hellebuyck is 21-13-3 with a 2.58 GAA and .917 SV this year.  Although he’s expected to get the start on Monday, the reigning Vezina winner has struggled lately.  He’s allowed 15 goals over his last five starts (including a game that saw him pulled within the first 10 minutes) and he’s also allowed at least three goals in four of his last five starts.
