The Edmonton Oilers and Winnipeg Jets will finish up their back-to-back set at Bell MTS Place in Winnipeg on Tuesday.

Edmonton’s 4-3 win over the Jets on Sunday has pushed them to slim -115 favourites to win on the NHL odds with a total of 6.5 goals.

Oilers vs. Jets Betting Analysis

The Jets came out with two wins in the three games these teams played against each other, last season. The season series was so close, the first game actually ended in a 1-0 shootout win for Winnipeg. Sports Interaction bettors seem to have noticed how tight games between these teams have been in the past, as the Oilers are receiving a razor thin margin of 52 per cent of bets.

Edmonton has struggled to score this year and as a result they have only covered the spread twice in seven games (once at home, once on the road). The Oilers have been pretty hit-or-miss with the Over, going 3-3-1 on the Over/Under (2-2 at home, 1-1-1 on the road).

Bettors are loving the Jets, this season. Winnipeg has only failed to cover once, and they have hit the Over in four of six games, including all three of their home games.

Edmonton Oilers

The Oilers 4-3 win on Sunday was a typical Oilers win: start slow, take the lead, blow the lead, and eventually eke out a last second win…literally. Leon Draisaitl scored with less than a second left on the clock, while Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Kyle Turris and Kailer Yamamoto added goals earlier in the night to give Edmonton their third win of the season and move them one game away from .500. Connor McDavid also finished with three assists, but the bigger story is Jesse Puljujarvi, who recorded one assist and a game-high six shots. The 2016 fourth overall pick was bumped to the top line and although he only has two assists in seven games, the Oilers must be seeing something from him to pair him with McDavid. Puljujarvi may have found his niche playing with McDavid, as it should open ice up for him when McDavid is being double-teamed. Puljujarvi was also the catalyst for Draisaitl’s game winner, screening the Winnipeg goalie.

Defensively, there is still a lot of work to do in Edmonton. The Oilers give up an average of 34 shots per game, 28th in the league, and they average 3.29 goals against per game, good for 20th in the league (league average is 3.03). Until this defence can lock thing down, Mikko Koskinen will have to carry the load, which might be easier said than done. With Mike Smith placed on long term injured reserve, the only other goalie on the roster to have played an NHL game is Troy Grosenick, who played two games for the San Jose Sharks in the 2014-15 season. Koskinen has played every game for the Oilers, this season, and has played, by far, the most minutes of any goalie in the league. In 414:30 of time on the ice (Arizona’s Darcy Kuemper is next closest with 301:19 time on ice), Koskinen has a 3.18 goals against average and a .907 save percentage.

Winnipeg Jets

After stunning the hockey world on Saturday and trading sniper Patrik Laine, the Jets will have a dangerous top-six when Pierre-Luc Dubois arrives. Unfortunately for Winnipeg, that likely won’t be for a couple weeks, as he needs to quarantine upon arrival in Canada. The Jets could have used Dubois on Sunday, though. Winnipeg was less than a second away from heading to overtime, but instead saw their three game win streak snapped. There were, however, positives to take away for Winnipeg. The Jets scored first for the third straight game and Nikolaj Ehlers scored for the fourth game in a row. Ehlers is tied with Kyle Connor for the team lead in goals with four each, while Connor and Mark Scheifele leads the Jets with nine points apiece.

Laurent Brossoit made 34 saves in the loss, bringing his goals against average to 3.46 and his save percentage to .911 through two games. With the North division already looking like it’s going to be tight, Winnipeg will need to lean heavily on starting goalie Connor Hellebuyck. Last year’s Vezina winner has three wins and a loss on the year, with a 2.25 goals against average and .920 save percentage.
