Edmonton Oilers vs. Washington Capitals Prediction, NHL Odds
Edmonton’s monstrous road trip continues with the front of a back-to-back on Wednesday night as the Oilers visit all-time goalscoring king Alex Ovechkin and the Capitals. Washington is -115 on the NHL odds with a total of 6.5 goals.
Oilers vs. Capitals NHL Betting Odds
Might Wednesday be the last time that NHL all-time greats Connor McDavid and Alex Ovechkin face off? Each has won the Hart Trophy three times, among other numerous awards.
The Capitals still are to visit Edmonton on Jan. 24, but injuries, etc. happen. This is expected to be the last season for the 40-year-old Ovechkin, who is now at 903 goals and counting. The Russian is having a good but not great season with six goals, nine assists and a plus-5 rating in 19 games.
Not out of the question we could see Oilers-Capitals in the Stanley Cup Finals, and that exact matchup is priced +8000. Ovechkin has just the one Cup in his career, while of course the 28-year-old McDavid continues to look for his first. One team has swept this season series four years running, and last year that was Washington – including a 7-3 home rout.
Ovechkin had a hat trick in that one but didn’t score in the game in Edmonton. He has 17 goals and 12 assists in 26 career games vs. the Oilers. McDavid had just an assist in the series last year and has nine goals and 16 assists in 15 career games vs. the Capitals. Stuart Skinner and Calvin Pickard each started once in net. The teams have split the past 10 meetings overall, and the over-under is 6-3-1.
Edmonton Oilers
Edmonton has looked quite good and then not great in alternating fashion on this seven-game road trip and is 2-2 on it following a shockingly ugly 5-1 loss in Buffalo on Monday. The Sabres had been 1-for-19 with the man advantage in their previous nine games but went 1-for-2.
Maybe the Oilers were flat off a big win at Carolina on Saturday and then looking ahead to this one. Jack Roslovic (seventh of season) had the lone goal Monday. Leon Draisaitl assisted on that – has at least one point in three straight — but Connor McDavid didn’t, meaning that future Hall of Fame duo remains at 498 goals factored on together and can Wednesday become the sixth duo in NHL history to reach 500. Wayne Gretzky and Jari Kurri lead with 764. Washington’s Alex Ovechkin and Nicklas Backstrom are in that club with 502. McDavid was held without a point for only the fourth time this season Monday.
Because Stuart Skinner started in net, it should be Calvin Pickard here. He has had a rough month at 0-2 with a 5.26 GAA in three total appearances and is 0-3-1 with a 4.07 GAA in four road starts overall this year. The over is 5-2 in Edmonton’s past six.
Washington Capitals
Washington has been slumping since about Oct. 25 but did snap a two-game skid Monday with a 2-1 home win over Los Angeles, just the Kings’ second regulation road loss all season. Matt Roy had his first goal of the year for the Capitals – first goal in 25 games dating to last season — and Alex Ovechkin his sixth for career goal No. 903. He passed Gordie Howe for the most regular-season goals scored at a single venue in NHL history with his 442nd goal at Capital One Arena.
Ovechkin also joined Corey Perry and Patrick Marleau as only the third different player age 40 or older since 2020-21 with goals in back-to-back games. Finally, it was Ovechkin’s 150th game-winning goal in the regular season and playoffs combined. That is one shy from tying Jaromir Jagr (151) for the most in NHL history.
Roy’s goal was the 13th by a Capitals defenceman this season, tied at the time for most in the league. Future Hall of Famer blueliner John Carlson played in his 1,106th career game with the Capitals and passed Nicklas Backstrom (1,105) for the second-most in franchise history.
Washington has now scored first 12 times this season, tied for the third most among in the NHL. Because Charlie Lindgren started Monday, it should be Logan Thompson here. He is 4-2-1 with a spectacular 1.56 GAA in seven home starts. The Capitals are 5-2 in their past seven vs. the West.
