The Nova Scotia duo of Nathan MacKinnon and Sidney Crosby are both averaging a point per game when they face off against each other in the NHL.

Barring a future meeting in the Stanley Cup Final or a trade, Cole Harbour natives Nathan MacKinnon and Sidney Crosby will only meet a maximum of two times every season. The two superstars are good friends and off-season training partners, but they’re also each extremely competitive and every time they face off in the NHL, it’s must-see entertainment.

MacKinnon and Crosby are set to face each other for the 18th time on Tuesday in Pittsburgh, so we’re taking a look at the history between these two elite talents.

Nathan MacKinnon

MacKinnon, the reigning Hart Trophy winner, remains on a tear this season. He enters Tuesday third in league scoring with 41 points (9G, 32A), one back of Kirill Kaprizov and Martin Necas. MacKinnon has produced multi-point efforts in 12 of 29 games this season and his 32 assists leads the NHL.

Sidney Crosby

Crosby, who leads the Pens with 27 points (8G, 19A), continues to set records. With an assist on Saturday, he moved into a tie with Gordie for the fifth-most assists with one franchise in NHL history. Earlier this season, Crosby became the 21st player in league history to score 600 career goals and he sits exactly 100 points away from matching Mario Lemieux’s franchise record of 1,723 career points.

Head-to-head history

MacKinnon has eight goals and 13 assists for 21 points in 20 career games against the Penguins. Crosby is nearly on the exact same pace as he has produced 21 points (14G, 9A) in 21 career games against the Avalanche.

While MacKinnon had a three-point effort the last time these teams met in March, Crosby has been on a hotter streak with points in four straight games against the Avs, including a four-point night in that last March meeting.
