The Ottawa Senators thought that a quality start to the season along with the acquisition of Matt Duchene would propel this team to the upper echelons of the Eastern Conference. Instead, they have lost five straight games and their offense has completely disappeared. They’ll have a tough time getting off the mat on Saturday against a New York Islanders team that’s playing very well right now.

NHL Odds and Betting Analysis

The Senators have won four of their last seven meetings with the Islanders, including two of the last three at home. However, the Sens have been tough to trust at home this year. They are just 4-9 in home games and have lost three of their last four on home ice.

One thing to keep in mind is that the Isles have played very well on Saturdays this season. They are a perfect 6-0 on Saturdays with five of the six games going over the number.

 New York Islanders

The Islanders have won five of their last six games and are now 13-7-2 on the season. They have been playing really well at the offensive end as they have scored a whopping 27 goals in their last six contests (4.5 per game). They are third in the NHL with goals scored (82). Considering how much the Sens are struggling at the defensive end, there’s no reason to think they’ll cool off in this spot.

The one thing you have to worry about with the Isles is that they are just 6-7-0 on the road this season compared to 7-0-2 at home. However, road games haven’t been much of an issue for them recently as they have won three of their last four away games.

 Ottawa Senators

So what has happened to the Sens offense? A team that had been productive before acquiring Duchene has gone completely cold with him. They are now 18th in the NHL in goals scored. They had averaged 3.8 goals per game through their first 16 contests but they have scored a total of five over their last five. That’s a problem when you consider that their goaltending has been shoddy.

Craig Anderson is 7-6-3 with a 2.94 GAA and an .896 save percentage. He has been terrible at home, posting a 3.31 GAA when the Sens play in front of their own audience. As for backup Mike Condon, he is 1-0-3 in four starts with a 3.00 GAA and a .904 save percentage. He’s allowed at least three goals in three of his last four starts.

Not a lot is going right for the Sens right now. Until we see a change, it’ll be hard to back them.

Islanders vs. Senators prediction:

Islanders 5-3
