The Maple Leafs kick off a crucial six-game stretch that features five games after eking out a narrow 2-1 win over Colorado on Wednesday that pulled them even with the Florida Panthers atop the divisional standings, two points up on Tampa Bay. The Rangers opened their current four-game home stand with a pair of defeats, capped by Tuesday’s 2-1 loss to Calgary and now find themselves trailing the surging Montreal Canadiens by one point in the race for the second wild card in the Eastern Conference.

The Maple Leafs arrive on Broadway trailing as slim +100 underdogs on the Thursday NHL odds. The Rangers are perched as -120 favourites, and the total is pegged at 6.0.

Thursday’s clash at Madison Square Garden is the third and final matchup of the regular season between these Original Six rivals. These clubs split their first two dates of the season, with the road team emerging victorious in each, capped by the Leafs 3-2 win at MSG back on February 28. Overall, these clubs have won two each over their past four meetings, halting a three-game head-to-head win streak by Toronto, during which the Rangers scored just seven total goals.

The Rangers’ playoff hopes have been dealt a severe blow during a shaky 2-4-2 run that features four straight losses at home. However, the Rangers have kept things close while allowing just nine total goals over the past four games and have recorded three shutout victories this season.

The Maple Leafs have halted a worrisome 1-4-1 slide with a pair of wins and now look to maintain the road warrior ways that have produced wins in eight of 11 away dates. However, like the Rangers, the Leafs offence has produced sporadically, scoring only twice five times over the past eight games. On a positive note, the Leafs have won three of four when playing in the second half of back-to-back games.

Toronto Maple Leafs

Joseph Woll emerged as the star of the Maple Leafs’ narrow 2-1 victory over the Avalanche on Wednesday night, turning aside 38 of 39 shots and has now earned the win on five of six starts. But with the club hitting the ice on consecutive nights. Anthony Stolarz will get his chance to halt a personal three-game losing streak during which he has surrendered 11 total goals. Stolarz is also winless in two straight road appearances and has allowed 3.25 goals per game over his past four.

Special teams have done their part in contributing to the Leafs offence. Auston Matthews has potted three of the team’s four power play goals over the past two games and Steven Lorentz contributed a shorthanded marker on Wednesday. However, the club has mustered just 12 total even-strength goals over the past eight games.

New York Rangers

The Rangers struggle to kickstart their offence has continued during their current two-game slide, with the club generating just 13 shots on goal in Tuesday’s 2-1 loss to the Flames and just 35 total shots over the past two contests. That has added to the pressure on Thursday’s expected starting goalie Igor Shesterkin, who has deserved a better fate during his current 3-3-2 run. Shesterkin has compiled a sparkling 2.01 goals against average and .926 save percentage while recording a pair of shutouts over that stretch but was lit up for three goals on just 16 shots in a 3-2 loss when the Leafs last came to town.

Artemi Panarin has remained the club’s biggest contributor up front, scoring seven times and adding seven assists while making it on to the scoresheet in all 10 of the Rangers’ games this month.
