The Maple Leafs open a two-game swing through the Sunshine State sporting a three-point lead over the defending champion Panthers after completing the sweep of their recent three-game homestand with Sunday’s 3-2 victory over Utah. The Panthers return to the drawing board after getting outclassed in Monday’s 4-1 loss to the visiting Washington Capitals that extends their current losing streak to four games and marks their fourth defeat in five home contests.

The Panthers’ recent woes have not hurt them on the Wednesday NHL odds, where they lead the way as -140 home favourites. The Leafs lag as +120 underdogs and the total is pegged at 6.0.

Tuesday night’s matchup at Amerant Bank Arena marks the first of four regular season meetings between these Atlantic Division rivals. These teams split four games last season, with the home team emerging victorious in each. However, the Leafs have taken five of eight overall from Florida in regular season action since the start of 2023.

Recent head-to-head dates have been mostly low-scoring affairs, with the total reaching 6.0 just twice in six meetings. The Maple Leafs arrive in Florida after winning seven of their past eight but have produced mixed results on the road this season, failing to post consecutive wins while compiling a 3-3-2 away record.

But things have gone no better for the Panthers, who have been outscored by a combined 20-9 margin during their four-game slide and surrendered at least four games in each of their losses during their current 1-4-0 on home ice.

Toronto Maple Leafs

Despite enduring a growing rash of injuries, the Maple Leafs have continued to gain momentum during their latest surge. The Buds have gotten the job done at both ends of the ice, with the goaltending duo of Joseph Woll and Anthony Stolarz allowing just 1.63 goals per game during the current 7-1-0 run.

Up front, the trio of Mitch Marner, William Nylander, and John Tavares have stepped up in the absence of injured captain Auston Matthews. The trio have contributed eight of the team’s 14 goals during their 4-0-0 run. Overall, Marner has made a strong case for a big new contract while turning in two-point performances in seven of his past eight outings and has racked up 16 points over his past 10 regular season appearances against the Panthers.

With goals in each of the past two games, Nylander has recorded nine markers in 121 outings and leads the club with 14 goals on the season.

Florida Panthers

While the Leafs’ biggest stars are performing as expected, the Panthers have struggled to produce consistent offence during their current slide. Florida was outshot by a wide 31-21 margin in Monday’s loss to the caps and have averaged just 27 shots per game during their 0-4-0 run. The Panthers have also failed to score after 40 minutes in each of their past three games and have potted just five total goals at even strength over their past four contests.

While the team’s leading scorer Sam Reinhart has continued to produce, scoring three times in the past four games, the duo of Aleksander Barkov and Sam Bennett has been largely quiet, combining to score just four total goals in the month of November. However, Barkov has enjoyed steady success when facing the Leafs, racking up 14 points in 11 regular season meetings over the past three seasons.
