Edmonton’s worst slide of the season continued on Saturday as they dropped a 3-1 home decision to the Carolina Hurricanes to extend their season-high losing streak to five games.  This will be the first night of a three-game Western Conference road trip for Toronto, who come in following a wild 5-4 home win against the Chicago Blackhawks on Saturday.

The Leafs are -126 favourites to win on the NHL odds, with a total of 6.5.

Maple Leafs vs. Oilers NHL Betting Odds

Toronto was in full control of the season series last year, winning six of nine games, including sweeping a three-game stretch in Edmonton in which the Leafs outscored the Oilers by a combined 13-1 over those games.  Sports Interaction bettors are taking the value for this game though, with almost 60 per cent of action taking the Oilers, while 80 per cent of bettors are taking the Over.

The Leafs have been very comfortable on the road against the Oilers as they’re 8-1 straight up in their last nine trips to Edmonton.  Toronto hasn’t been a great cover option this season, going 10-19 against the spread overall and 5-7 ATS on the road.  The total has gone Over in the Leafs’ last seven games.

Home ice hasn’t been very helpful for Edmonton lately as they’ve dropped four of their last five games at Rogers Place.  They’re 11-15 ATS overall and have failed to cover in nine of 14 home games.  The total has gone Under in seven of the Oilers’ last eight games against Atlantic Division opponents.

Toronto Maple Leafs

Toronto is finally getting some help for goaltender Jack Campbell.  Petr Mrazek played his first game since Oct. 30 in the Leafs’ win on Saturday.  Mrazek looked rusty, stopping 31 of 35 shots.  John Tavares, William Nylander, Auston Matthews, Pierre Engvall and David Kampf all found the back of the net for Toronto.  After a slow start to the year, Matthews has picked things up and now sits 10th in league scoring with 31 points and tied for third with 18 goals.

Campbell is expected to get the start in net on Tuesday.  With Mrazek held to just three starts this season because of injuries, Campbell has performed well with the much higher than expected workload.  He is 14-5-2 with a 1.99 goals-against average, .935 save percentage and three shutouts.  Among goalies with at least three games this year, Campbell ranks in the top-10 for GAA, SV and shutouts.

Mitch Marner will continue to miss time with a shoulder injury suffered in practice.  Jason Spezza will also be out of the lineup as he is set to serve the fourth of a six-game suspension.

Edmonton Oilers

Lack of depth and defensive injuries are starting to take their toll on Edmonton.  The Oilers are without defencemen Duncan Keith (upper-body), Kris Russell (upper-body), Slater Koekkoek (lower-body) and goaltender Mike Smith (leg).  The team could also be without forward Zach Hyman, who appeared to injure his shoulder in the loss to Carolina on Saturday.

Edmonton has relied almost totally on the duo of Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl, who are tied for the league lead in points with 45 each.  McDavid also leads the NHL with 29 assists, while Draisaitl has an NHL-best 23 goals.  The two superstars have accounted for 45 per cent of the Oilers’ goals this season.  Neither player recorded a point against Carolina.  Ryan Nugent-Hopkins had the only goal, while Mikko Koskinen stopped 28 of 31 shots.  Koskinen, who is expected to start on Tuesday, is 12-5-0 this season, with a 3.05 GAA and .907 SV.
