The visiting Maple Leafs are the -120 favourite on the NHL odds, with the game total opening at an even 6 goals. The puck will drop from the Delta Center in Salt Lake City at 10:00 PM ET.
Maple Leafs vs. Hockey Club NHL Betting Odds
This is the second meeting of the two-game set between Toronto and Utah. The Leafs squeaked a 3-2 win at home in late November. Star power was the difference in that game as Mitch Marner (2G) and William Nylander (1G, 1A) each had two-point games.
If you look back to the Hockey Club’s days in Arizona, the Leafs have won three straight meetings and they have played the OVER/UNDER 2-1-2 over the past three seasons.
Before their three-game losing streak, the Leafs had won five in a row albeit, very narrowly in some instances. They have failed to cover the spread in each of their past six games, dropping their record ATS to 31-32 on the campaign. Their defensive play has been a major red flag as of late giving up an average of five goals a game over their past four games. Five of their past seven contests have hit the OVER putting their record at 30-30-3 this season.
Utah is 4-1-1 in their past six games but has only covered the spread twice in that set. They have covered in just 28 of their 63 games this season, one of the fewest in the league. Utah’s offence is averaging just 2.83 goals per game this season but they have been better this past week, scoring more than three in three of their past four. Their 24-34-5 record on the OVER/UNDER gives them one of the fewest OVERs in the league.
Toronto Maple Leafs
The Maple Leafs debuted their new trade deadline acquisitions in Colorado on Saturday night, after picking up defenceman Brandon Carlo from their rivals in Boston and forward Scott Laughton from Philadelphia on Friday.
Toronto got out to a good start coming out of the first period with a 3-2 lead over the Avalanche. John Tavares (26th) would score his second of the game in the middle frame to put his team up 4-2 before the team would collapse. The Avs would go on to score five straight unanswered goals to complete the 7-4 victory.
The newest Leaf Scott Laughton ended as a -2, playing just over 10 minutes, while Brandon Carlo led the team in ice-time skating for over 22 minutes.
Toronto will look to avoid losing four straight games for the first time this season when they wrap up their road trip Monday in Utah.
Utah Hockey Club
Despite having a good bit of cap space at their disposal, the management in Utah decided to stick with their guys, and not add anything at Friday’s deadline. The team has been looking better as of late going 7-3-1 in their past 11 games, as they continue to stick around in the Western wildcard race.
They most recently came up short in overtime in Chicago on Friday night, losing 4-3 to the Blackhawks. The Hockey Club was down 3-1 going into the third but rallied back to tie things up in the last few minutes of the period. Utah deserved to win that one out shooting the Hawks 39-25, but could not find the back of the goal.
Utah has been relying on goalie Karel Vejmelka heavily, starting him in each of the past six games. The team announced Sunday that his goalie partner Connor Ingram would be away from the team while he enters the player assistance program. Until his return, Jaxson Stauber will be the backup.
