The Leafs got a much-needed character performance from their biggest stars while rallying for a 6-5 overtime victory on Tuesday night. That marked a turnaround for the Toronto offence, which scored just two goals in each of their first three contests, and more of the same may be needed for this club to shake off the defensive woes that dogged them on the road late last season, when they surrendered 4.38 goals per game over their final eight away dates.
The Golden Knights are coming off a 95-point campaign and their third trip to the Stanley Cup Final with no sign of a playoff hangover. Toronto Maple Leafs
The Leafs’ big guns finally fired with both barrels in Tuesday’s win. Prized rookie Gavin McKenna finally busted out playing alongside John Tavares with a goal and an assist, while Auston Matthews potted the game winner in overtime for his first marker of the season and added three helpers. William Nylander remained red hot with his team-leading third goal, and also contributed a pair of helpers while Jack Roslovic enjoyed a two-point night. But perhaps most important is the good health of this squad, which saw no new visits to the clinic this week.
Vegas Golden Knights
After finishing last season in the middle of the NHL pack in goals scored, the Golden Knights offence has erupted early in the new campaign. On Tuesday night. it was Tomas Hertl’s turn to shine, with the veteran Czech scoring a pair of goals and setting up two more in a 6-2 rout of the Kraken. Jack Eichel also added to his lead in team scoring with a goal and three assists while Victor Olofsson contributed a pair of Markers. Olofsson has now picked up a point in all four of the Golden Knights’ games to date, five points in total, but his status for Thursday’s contest is uncertain after suffering an undisclosed injury in Thursday’s win in Seattle. Former Leaf Mitch Marner has been quiet in comparison, picking up just two points to date, and has scored in just two of nine home appearances since last spring.
