The Chicago Blackhawks must contend with a rash of injuries and off-ice controversy as they search for their first win of the season in Wednesday night’s home date with the slumping Toronto Maple Leafs. The Blackhawks saw their early-season woes extended with a 6-3 loss to Detroit on Sunday, and have now fallen to defeat in each of their first six outings. The Maple Leafs stumble into the Windy City riding a four-game slide after dropping a 4-1 decision in Carolina on Monday.

Despite their recent struggles, the Maple Leafs will hit the ice at United Center on Wednesday as lofty -201 road favourites to win on the NHL odds, while the total is pegged at 6.0.

Maple Leafs vs. Blackhawks NHL Betting Odds

The Maple Leafs have soared on the game line odds while garnering 82 per cent of the bets placed on Wednesday night’s contest. Toronto has swiftly gained ground since opening as -166 chalk, while the Blackhawks have dipped to +168 home underdogs. The total has remained unchanged since opening at 6.0, but the OVER remains pegged as a -115 wager while attracting 71 per cent of bets.

Wednesday’s clash marks the first meeting between these Original Six rivals since January 2020. The Blackhawks have held the edge in recent clashes, scoring 16 total goals while winning three straight. Indeed, high scoring has been a consistent theme when these two teams meet, with the OVER going 7-2 over their past two matchups, and 4-1 in their past five at United Center. The home team has struggled of late in this head-to-head series, winning just two of the past seven. In addition, the Maple Leafs have been a massive betting disappointment when facing Chicago as heavy chalk, losing outright in five straight when sporting odds of -200 or shorter.

Toronto Maple Leafs

The burning question in Toronto so far this season is, when will the team’s vaunted offence finally show up? With reigning Rocket Richard trophy winner Auston Matthews leading the way, the Leafs finished last season among the highest scoring teams in the NHL. However, with Matthews, Mitch Marner, and John Tavares combining to score just two total goals to date, the club has mustered just four total goals through three road contests, and has been limited to two or fewer goals in five of their first seven outings.

Chicago Blackhawks

The Blackhawks are arguably the best possible opponent for Toronto right now, considering their early-season woes. Currently ranked 31st in the NHL with a bloated 4.50 team goals against average, the Blackhawks have also struggled badly on offence, averaging just two goals per game to date. Those concerns are amplified by a worrisome COVID-19 outbreak that has sidelined five players, including Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane. Complicating matters further for Chicago is the ongoing investigation into sexual assault allegations that forced the resignation of Blackhawks team president Stan Bowman earlier this week.
