The Tampa Bay Lightning and New York Rangers are set for a Thursday night showdown at Madison Square Garden. This will be the season opener for Tampa Bay, while it is the second game of the season for New York.

These teams are coming off very different 2025-26 campaigns. The Lightning posted 106 points and made the playoffs for the ninth straight season. On the other side, the Rangers struggled early and often en route to totaling just 77 points, which were the fewest in the Eastern Conference.

Tampa Bay and New York met three times last season, with the Rangers winning the series 2-1. New York won the most recent meeting by a score of 4-2 in Tampa Bay on April 15, 2026.

Lightning vs. Rangers NHL Betting Odds

Last season, the Lightning posted a 50-26-6 record, while the Rangers went 34-39-9. Heading into the 2026 season, Tampa Bay is looking to keep things rolling, while the Rangers are looking for a bounce back campaign.

In this matchup, the Lightning enter as slight favourites with odds of -142 on the NHL odds board. On the other side, New York has odds of +120 to pull off the modest upset on home ice.

On the puck line, Lightning -1.5 is valued at +180, while New York +1.5 is -218. The game total is set at 5.5, with odds juiced to the Over at -135 and odds to +114 on the Under.

At +160, Tampa Bay’s Nikita Kucherov has the shortest odds of any player to score a goal in this game. Kucherov continues to post elite numbers on a yearly basis. He finished second in the NHL with 130 points and eighth with 44 goals last season.

With odds of +185, New York’s Pavel Dorofeyev has the shortest odds of any Ranger to score a goal in this contest. Dorofeyev enters his first season with the Rangers after scoring 37 goals with the Golden Knights in 2025-26.

Tampa Bay Lightning

The Lightning are still going strong with their main core of playmakers. Tampa Bay’s forward group led by Nikita Kucherov, Jake Guentzel, Brandon Hagel, and Brayden Point gives them reliable top-six scoring that is the envy of all other 31 teams.

Tampa Bay’s blue line looks a little different in 2026-27, as veteran John Carlson is now viewed as the Lightning’s No. 1 defenseman. Carlson scored 14 goals and dished out 46 assists over the course of 71 games between the Capitals and Ducks last season.

In net, Andrei Vasilevskiy figures to once again be one of the NHL’s top goaltenders. Vasilevskiy paced the NHL with 39 wins last season while also ranking second with a 2.31 goals-against average and third with a .912 save percentage.

New York Rangers

The Rangers have nowhere to go but up after finishing dead last in the Eastern Conference with 77 points last season.

New York struggled to score goals on a consistent basis, which was the main reason for their woes. In total, the Rangers finished 23rd in the NHL scoring 2.87 goals per game. But they were especially woeful at home, as they ranked 31st by averaging a measly 2.44 goals per game at Madison Square Garden.

To help fix their goal-scoring problem, the Rangers brought in Pavel Dorofeyev from the Golden Knights. Dorofeyev scored 35 goals in his breakout 2024-25 season before building on that total with 37 goals last season.

NHL Prediction: Who Will Win Lightning vs. Rangers?

After ranking 31st in goals per game scored at home, the Rangers got a bad draw by facing Andrei Vasilevskiy in their first home game of the 2026-27 season. New York should be better offensively this season, but it may take some time for the new pieces to gel. Tampa Bay’s offensive core is much more reliable, and Vasilevskiy remains elite between the pipes.
