Leafs’ William Nylander’s Contract Extension
All NHL teams are extremely busy this week, what with the draft just around the corner on Thursday night. The Maple Leafs are no exception, to say nothing of the fact that they are heading into an intriguing offseason with a brand new GM in Brad Treliving.
Treliving will get to dive into the deep end of making his team successful this week, as it’s being reported that he and William Nylander’s agent are to meet in Nashville, which is where the Entry Draft is held this year.
William Nylander is coming off an impressive and career-best 87 points in 82 games in 2022-2023. His 40 goals – to go along with 47 assists – was also a personal season high for him. He’s notched at least 80 points in the past two regular season campaigns, far and away his best years since joining the club in 2015.
The Toronto forward is eligible for a contract extension as of July 1. He has one year left on his present deal. TSN’s Pierre Lebrun states that teams have indeed reached out to the Maple Leafs to inquire about swapping for Nylander. Toronto is keeping an open mind about any and all possibilities and it would seem they have to. They simply may not be able to afford to keep the Alberta native, what with so much money tied up in him, Auston Matthews, John Tavares, and Mitchell Marner.
For that matter, it’s also been reported that Treliving has met with Matthews’ representative, although there have been no promises that a new contract will be finalized as of July 1
