Seattle Kraken
Teamwork makes the dream work, and that has been the way the Kraken have gotten the job done all season. It was no different in Game 1. After getting goals from 15 players in Round 1, five different players scored in their 5-4 win on Thursday night. Jaden Schwartz (3rd) got the Kraken on the board to tie the game at 1 before they would go on to score three goals in 52 seconds to wrap up the first period. They failed to score in the second and third periods but got one when it mattered most from Yanni Gourde (2nd)with about eight minutes left in overtime.
Gourde leads the team with 7 points (2G 5A) this postseason and the four other goal scorers in this game, Justin Schultz (2G 4A), Schwartz (3G 3A), Jordan Eberle (2G 3A) and Oliver Bjorkstrand (3G 2A) are right behind him.
The Kraken now boasts an impressive 4-1 record as the road team, only losing Game 2 in Colorado. Tuesday’s game was the first time this playoffs they had not scored the opening goal.
Dallas Stars
After getting concussed in Game 1 versus the Wild on April 17th Joe Pavelski returned amazingly, notching four goals for the Stars. At 38 years and 295 days, Pavelski is the oldest player in NHL history to score four in a playoff game. “Epic. Epic. Ashamed we wasted it and didn’t win,” said Stars head coach Pete DeBoer after the 5-4 loss.
Max Domi assisted on three of Pavelski’s goals and goalie Jake Oettinger stopped 39 of 44 shots. After giving up four in the first period, Oettinger returned to form stopping 31 straight shots to keep Dallas alive in the game. He still has an impressive 2.34 goals-against average and a .921 save percentage, good for second amongst remaining goalies with at least five games played. This was his second time giving up five goals this postseason, but the last time was a turning point in the series for him as he went undefeated to finish off the Wild.
The loss snapped a streak of three wins in a row for the Stars, but they have yet to lose two in a row. They now have a 2-2 record at home in the playoffs and are 0-2 in overtime.
