NHL: Seattle Kraken at Buffalo Sabres

Off a terrible defensive effort in Detroit, the Winnipeg Jets look to get back in the win column Thursday as they make their only visit of the season to Buffalo.

Jets vs. Sabres NHL Betting Odds

Thursday is the first of two regular-season meetings between the teams, with the Sabres visiting Winnipeg on Jan. 26. The teams split last season, with each winning on the road. It was 3-2 in a shootout in Buffalo for the Jets. Blake Wheeler had a goal in regulation and the shootout winner. That was Wheeler’s only point in the series. Pierre-Luc Dubois led with three (1G, 2A), and Connor Hellebuyck was in net for both, allowing a total of six goals on 64 shots.

Buffalo’s best forward this season is winger Tage Thompson as he leads the club with 31 goals and 57 points. He had two assists in the 2021-22 series vs. Winnipeg. Netminder Craig Anderson has faced Winnipeg 22 times in his long career and is 12-4-4 with a 2.57 GAA and .930 SV.

The road team is 5-2 in the past seven meetings. The total has landed under in six of those.

Winnipeg Jets

Winnipeg’s season-high five-game winning streak was snapped Tuesday in a wild 7-5 loss in Detroit. The Wings jumped out to a three-goal lead in the first, but the Jets got within a goal three different times before an empty-netter at 18:40 of the third period clinched it for Detroit. Five different players scored for the Jets. Mark Scheifele had his 24th goal of the year and added an assist. Connor Hellebuyck allowed six goals on 22 shots in arguably his worst start of the season.

“We’ve been giving up way too many chances against,” said Nate Schmidt, who scored his fourth of the season in the loss. “It’s a little bit uncharacteristic of us right now. We’re getting all of the offence we can get.” Centre Kevin Stenlund and blueliner Ville Heinola both sat with an illness. The Jets are 1-4 in their past five on the road.

Buffalo Sabres

Buffalo lost its second in a row at home Tuesday, 4-3 to Seattle. Alex Tuch had two goals (20 on season), and Rasmus Dahlin (career-high 13th) the other as well has having an assist. The stellar young blueliner has six multi-point games in 16 games since the beginning of December. Tuch has 10 goals and 23 points over that same stretch. Eric Comrie made 18 saves in first NHL action since Nov. 16 after recovering from a lower-body injury. The Sabres held leads of 1-0 and 2-1 in the first two periods.

Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen had been slated to start against the Kraken but fell ill Tuesday morning. It probably will be Craig Anderson (7-6-1, 2.71 GAA, .921 SV) here. The Sabres are 6-1 in their past seven vs. the West.
