Winnipeg Jets vs. Edmonton Oilers Prediction, NHL Odds
Edmonton will be back on the ice after pounding the Seattle Kraken 7-2 last night, thanks to Connor McDavid’s five-point performance in what was a crucial inter-divisional matchup.
The Oilers are a slight -138 favourite to win on the NHL odds with the total set at 6.5.
Jets vs. Oilers NHL Betting Odds
These teams have met many times over the past two seasons, exactly 20 including preseason and playoff matchups. The Over/Unders in those games went 8-10-2 to the Under, the Oilers won the 2020-21 season series 7-2, but the Jets got the last laugh sweeping them 4-0 in the playoffs. Edmonton also won last year’s season series edging out the Jets 2-1. Bettors are split on tonight’s moneyline 51-49 in the Oilers’ favour despite them being three points behind the Jets in the Western Conference standings.
Winnipeg’s defensive game plan has helped them play the Under in eight consecutive games, pushing their record on the Over/Under to 11-23-2. They are sixth in goals against, giving up just 2.6 per game, but their offence has dropped off a bit this month, scoring just 2.9 goals per game over the past 10 games. With a 22-14 record against the spread, the Jets are one of only five teams with 22 or more covers.
After playing back-to-back games to the under, their Oilers offence put up seven goals alone Friday night to hit the Over for the sixth time in 10 games. Only two other teams have played the Over more than Edmonton, who has scored the most goals so far this season (135). They are an even 18-18 ATS so far after covering in three of their past four games.
Winnipeg Jets
Mark Scheifele’s hattrick led the Jets to a 4-2 over the Vancouver Canucks on Thursday, snapping a season-high three-game losing streak. This was Scheifele’s second three-goal game of the month, as he leads the team with 23 goals and is fourth in points at 31.
Winnipeg did not score at five-on-five in the win, with Scheifele scoring a pair of powerplay goals and one in an empty net and Pierre-Luc Dubois scoring on a penalty shot.
Something that surely had Jets fans worried was seeing their top point producer and top defenceman Josh Morrissey leave Thursday’s game and not return. Coach Rick Bowness is hopeful the league’s second-highest-scoring defenceman will be available versus Edmonton after suffering a minor lower-body injury.
Connor Hellebuyck will be back in goal to face the high-flying Oilers. He has faced them more than any other team posting a 10-11-2 record with 3.16 goals against average and a .900 save percentage.
The Jets will need to improve their spotty 9-7-1 road record in the new year to keep their position as the second-best team in the Central Division.
Edmonton Oilers
The Oilers’ offence exploded for four goals in the first 10 minutes of last night’s game versus the Kraken. Klim Kostin and Zach Hyman would each score their second goal of the game in the second period to give Edmonton a 6-2 lead headed to the final frame. In the third, Connor McDavid would tuck one through the five-hole to cap off his five-point game (1G 4A).
McDavid’s point streak now sits at 17 games matching his career high. He’s scored 16 goals and picked up 37 points and is running away with the NHL lead in points, 15 ahead of teammate Leon Draisaitl.
Stuart Skinner stood tall in goal stopping 36 of 38 shots to pick up his 12th win of the season. With Saturday’s matchup coming on a back-to-back with a bit of travel, expect to see Jack Campbell start versus the Jets. Campbell will be looking for his first win since Dec. 13th and has not seen game action since Dec. 19th.
