Toronto swept last year’s three-game season series. The Islanders’ offence struggled, combining for only three goals throughout the set. Their past four head-to-head matchups have all played the UNDER, putting their record on the OVER/UNDER to 1-5 over their past six. About 78 per cent of early bets are taking the favourited Maple Leafs to win tonight and 73 per cent are taking the OVER set at 6.0.
The Islanders have lost back-to-back games, both of which have played over the set total of 5.5. Five of New York’s past seven matchups have gone to the OVER. They have played very well against the spread so far this year, posting a 12-7 record, which includes a 6-4 stretch over their past 10 games.
The Leafs played the OVER their last time out versus the Buffalo Sabres, but are 3-5 to the UNDER in their past eight games, putting them at 6-12-1 on the year. They have not had much luck ATS this season, but look to be turning it around, covering two of their past three.
Both teams have been playing impressive defensive hockey early on in the season, keeping their opponents to less than three goals per game. Toronto has 2.7 goals against per game, good for eighth and the Islanders are just behind them in 11th at 2.8.
New York Islanders
The Islanders have fallen back down to reality, dropping back-to-back games after winning nine of their previous 11. They have had it rough during their two-game skid, allowing five goals in each outing.
New York’s most recent 5-2 loss to the Dallas Stars on Saturday night, came after allowing four straight goals to finish the game. Mathew Barzal did score his first and second goals of the season in the game though, getting the monkey off his back and extending his team lead in points to 21 (2G, 19A). Semyon Varlamov was in goal and stopped 30 of 34 shots, dropping his record to 4-3 on the season.
The Isles are likely to turn back to Ilya Sorokin, who has been the better of the tandem so far this season, in net on Monday. He sits in the top 10 among goalies who have started at least 11 games in GAA (8th, 2.41) and save percentage (T-5th, .925) while posting a 7-5 record.
Toronto Maple Leafs
The Maple Leafs are beginning to heat up. They have not lost in regulation in their past four games, improving their record to 10-5-4 after a 5-2 win over the struggling Buffalo Sabres on Saturday night.
William Nylander scored twice, while Tavares had a goal and two assists in the game. Nylander and Tavares now share the team lead in goals with 10 a piece. Mitch Marner threw in two helpers against Buffalo to extend his point streak to 12 games, keeping the team lead in points (22). Matt Murray stopped 32 shots for his second win of the season.
After suffering an injury in the first game of the season, Murray has returned in style. Murray has started the last three games for the Leafs and has played well, posting a 2.76 GAA and a .913 save percentage.
Toronto has been stellar so far through November, going 6-1-2 and will look to extend that Monday on home ice, before heading on a four-game road trip to wrap up the month.
