The home team has held serve through the first three games of the Eastern Conference semifinal series between the Carolina Hurricanes and New York Rangers, and the Blueshirts are short favourites to win on the NHL odds at Madison Square Garden for Game 4 on Tuesday night.

Hurricanes vs. Rangers NHL Playoffs Betting Odds

It’s almost shocking how good Carolina has been at home in these playoffs (unbeaten) and bad on the road (winless), losing every away game by at least two goals and not scoring more than two in any of them. The Rangers lost their first home game of Round 1 vs. Pittsburgh but haven’t lost there since.

With the Canes up 2-1, they are -345 on the series line (were -1000 entering Game 3) with the Rangers at +240 (were +525). On the exact series result, Carolina in five is a +215 favourite followed by in six at +269. The Rangers in six is the +659 long shot. That the series ends in seven games is +154, followed by six at +159 and five at +218.

The favourite is 8-2 in the past 10 meetings overall. The total has gone under in seven of the past 10 and in each game of this series.

Carolina Hurricanes

No. 1 goaltender Frederik Andersen, the former Maple Leaf, hasn’t played since April 16 due to a lower-body injury but did practice on Monday – albeit for only about 20 minutes, so he’s clearly not going to be active for Game 4. Backup Antti Raanta has largely been terrific regardless. He stopped 30 of 32 shots in Sunday’s 3-1 loss.

Nino Niederreiter’s fourth goal of the playoffs had cut the Rangers lead to 2-1 at 8:18 of the second, but that was it for Carolina. Defenceman Brendan Smith had one of the assists on Niederreiter’s goal, Smith’s third straight game with a point. The franchise playoff record for a blueliner is four in a row by Frantisek Kaberle in 2006. Carolina is 6-3 all-time in a series in which it leads 2-1. The Canes are 6-20 in their past 26 playoff games as underdogs.

New York Rangers

The Rangers are 11-23 all-time when trailing 2-1 in a series. Igor Shesterkin has returned to his regular-season form – he will win the Vezina Trophy – in this series after struggling some in Round 1. The Russian improved to 11-1 in his career when making 40-plus saves in a game (regular season and playoffs combined) by stopping 43 shots in Game 3. He has stopped 339 shots in these playoffs, the most ever by a Rangers goaltender through his first 10 games of a postseason.

Mika Zibanejad (fourth of playoffs), Chris Kreider (sixth) and Tyler Motte (first) had the New York goals Sunday. It was Kreider’s third game-winner of this postseason. The franchise record is four by three players, including Mark Messier. It was Kreider’s 30th career playoff goal, passing Messier (29) for the second-most in Rangers history, trailing only Rod Gilbert (34). The Rangers are 24-9 in their past 33 as home favourites.
