The Edmonton Oilers are 18-10-4 on the season and are in first place in the Pacific Division. However, it speaks volumes that they’re playing at home on Tuesday night against Carolina – also an 18-win team – but find themselves as a home dog. Is there value betting them in this spot or are the oddsmakers trying to tell us something with this line?

Hurricanes vs. Oilers Betting Analysis

The Hurricanes are 18-12 overall in terms of their moneyline record, including 5-2 against teams with a winning record. They are 8-3 after scoring four or more goals in their previous game and 7-3 against Western Conference foes.

As for the Oilers, they are 9-4 against the East and 6-3 when facing a team with a winning record. They have not fared well in this series, though, as they’ve lost three of their last four to Carolina – including two straight at home.

Carolina Hurricanes

The Hurricanes have been a team of streaks as they started the year winning six of seven, dropped seven of their next 10, but enter Tuesday’s affair having won nine of 14. Their offense is clicking right now as they’re averaging 3.4 goals per game over their last 13 contests. They’re coming off a 6-2 win over the Minnesota Wild on Saturday where superstar Sebastian Aho had a hat trick, along with a career-best five points.

The Canes are not a bad road team (8-6-1) but goaltender Petr Mrazek has struggled in away games. He’s just 3-3-1 in seven road starts with a 3.24 GAA and an .891 save percentage. He’s 10-3-0 at home with a 2.29 GAA and .910 save percentage at home, so that’s a sizable drop-off.

Edmonton Oilers

One of the reasons the Oilers are a dog in this spot is they’ve been merely treading water over their last 11 games. They are just 5-4-2 (or 5-6 to bettors) and that’s not good enough. Looking further back, this team is just 8-6-3 since their 10-4-1 start, so it’s fairly clear that their play has tapered off.

Leon Draisatl and Connor McDavid are still having fantastic seasons as the Oilers tandem is on pace for 136 and 133-point campaigns. Both lead the team with 19 goals. However, the Oilers – when they struggle – don’t seem to get much help from the supporting cast. James Neal was a revelation in October as he had 11 goals in the month but he had just three goals and four points in November. No other player on the team has even hit double-digits in goals scored.

Mikko Koskinen is expected in net on Tuesday and he’s been steady all season. He has a decent .925 save percentage in December and .921 overall. The main issue is the Oilers are giving up a lot of shots as they were seventh-worst in the category in November (33.4). Meanwhile, they’re not firing enough pucks at the net themselves as they are second-worst in the category in December and were eighth-worst in November. That’s mostly why they’re scoring the seventh-fewest goals per game this month.
