Thursday is the first of two meetings between the teams with Ottawa going to Las Vegas on Nov. 23. The Golden Knights swept the season series last year and have lost just once to the Senators all-time.
Jonathan Marchessault led Vegas with four points (3G, 1A), and Nicolas Roy (2A) and Reilly Smith (2A) each had two. Robin Lehner was in net for both and stopped 77 of 79 shots – but he will miss this season due to injury. Brady Tkachuk led Ottawa with two points (2G) and no one else had more than one. Anton Forsberg allowed two goals in his loss and Filip Gustavsson surrendered four in his loss.
Vegas Golden Knights
Vegas won its fifth in a row Tuesday, 3-2 in overtime at Washington to start a five-game trip. Shea Theodore scored at 1:35 of overtime. William Carrier and Jack Eichel also scored for the Golden Knights. Eichel added an assist, and Alex Pietrangelo helped set up all three Vegas goals. Eichel leads the team with five goals and 12 assists. Theodore has the best plus/minus on the team at plus-12. His three goals are tied for the fourth-most among NHL defensemen. His eight points are tied for eighth. His seven overtime goals career are a Knights record, regardless of position. Coach Bruce Cassidy said Theodore reminds him of Sergei Gonchar, a Stanley Cup-winning defenseman Cassidy coached in Washington. Logan Thompson stopped 19 shots and improved to 5-2-2 with a 1.73 goals-against average and .938 SV. The Knights are 5-1 in their past six road games.
Ottawa Senators
Ottawa dropped its third in a row Tuesday, 4-3 at Tampa Bay. The Sens took a 3-2 lead at 11:44 of the third on Claude Giroux’s third goal of the season. Dylan Gambrell (first) and Mathieu Joseph (first and shorthanded) also scored. It was Joseph’s first game at Amalie Arena since being traded by the Lightning for Nicholas Paul on March 20. Brady Tkachuk had his shot during a breakaway with one second to play go just wide. The chance came after Tampa Bay failed to score on an empty-net rush. Drake Batherson had his six-game point streak end. The Lightning were 1-for-8 on the power play, failing to convert on a major penalty and 5-on-3 advantage in the second period. Ottawa’s Anton Forsberg stopped 30 shots. He’s probably due a game off soon. The Senators are 5-13 in their past 18 vs. the Pacific Division.
