Calgary Flames vs. Tampa Bay Lightning Prediction, NHL Odds
A week ago, this game would have looked extremely lopsided. Somewhat surprisingly, the Flames and Lightning have a combined seven-game winning streak over the past week, entering their Wednesday night matchup.
The Lightning have catapulted to the top of the Atlantic and possess the third-best winning percentage in the Eastern Conference. The Flames have been in or around the cellar of the NHL all season. Given recent form, though, this one may be a bit more entertaining than expected.
Tampa Bay is a -190 favourite to win on the NHL odds, with the total set at 6.0.
Flames vs. Lightning NHL Betting Odds
In Calgary’s current three-game winning streak, they have outscored Buffalo, Dallas, and Vancouver a combined 14-6. It is not just one single aspect of their game that the Flames have figured out. They have improved both sides of the puck thanks to great performances from Morgan Frost, Rasmus Andersson, and both goaltenders.
The prior week has been similar for the Lightning, as has the past month. Tampa has won by multiple goals in five out of its last seven games. Lately, when the Lightning have won, they run up the score. Despite injuries to key players, Tampa has sustained phenomenal form and production. They have won five from their last six games and seven out of their last nine at home.
Calgary Flames
The past week was much-needed for the Flames. Calgary has clearly figured a few things out, but it is not likely to be sustainable. The larger sample size of the season gives a better idea of who this team is than over the past week.
The Flames rank 31st in the NHL in goals scored per game and power play percentage, 17th in goals allowed per game, and 18th on the penalty kill. They have just three wins in their last 13 road games, and now the Lightning know they need to bring a little extra effort to bury this version of the Flames. If Calgary can keep up this roll, it is found money. But they will have a tough time doing so in Tampa.
Tampa Bay Lightning
After a 1-4-2 start to the season, the Lightning have gone 12-3-0. That run includes a 6-2 mark at home. Tampa’s turnaround is not remotely surprising, considering they have been the epitome of consistency for the past decade. Their leaders have really shown up and dragged the team back into contention.
The Lightning have three players averaging over a point per game, all three of whom also have double-digit goals. The Flames’ leading goal scorer has eight goals in 24 games played. Tampa has endured a few injuries, but has maintained its solid form, receiving contributions from players up and down the lineup. Their top-end talent is better than Calgary’s, as is their depth.
NHL Prediction: Who Will Win Flames vs. Lightning?
This Flames run is great to see, but it does not appear sustainable with this group. Their recent opponents may not have brought their A-game, not believing they needed it to beat Calgary. But given strong performances from the goaltender on up, Tampa will not fall into the same trap.
The Lightning are too experienced, and at the end of the day, they are still the deeper, better team. They are in great form, both in general and at home. Another multiple-goal win by a score of 4-1 to hit a five-game winning streak appears more likely than Calgary extending to a four-game winning streak by punching up in Tampa.
