The Red Wings have won eight of the last 11 games against the Senators and six of the last eight visits to the Canadian capital. Detroit has seemed allergic to travel recently with an ugly 6-16 record in its last 22 away games.
Bettors could be in for a scoring treat on Saturday. The over is 4-1-1 in the Sens’ last six home games and 3-1-2 in their last six games overall.
Ottawa is the fourth favorite to finish first in the Atlanta Division on the Sports Interaction NHL futures board at +689 behind the Toronto Maple Leafs (+212), Tampa Bay Lightning (+224) and Montreal Canadiens (+484).The Wings, meanwhile, are dead last at +2700.
Detroit Red Wings
It’s only one game but hockey prognosticators might want to ease up on shoveling all that dirt on the Wings. Detroit opened the season with a 4-2 win at Minnesota on Thursday night. The Wings coughed up a two-goal lead but their captain – and soon to be 37-year-old – Henrik Zetterberg broke the tie when he snapped a wrist shot through the five hole and past Minnesota netminder Devan Dubynk.
Detroit’s special teams played a major part with the power-play unit contributing with two goals on five man advantages, and the penalty kill kept the Wild off the scoresheet on four power plays.
Ottawa Senators
There are few teams in the NHL as reliant on one player as the Sens’ are with defenceman Erik Karlsson. The two-time Norris Trophy winner had major surgery on his ankle last June and he missed the season opener against the Washington Capitals on Thursday. He didn’t practice on Thursday but team officials are optimistic he’ll play Saturday against the Wings.
Ottawa is looking to bounce-back from a 5-4 shootout loss to the Caps – a game in which it led 3-1 in the second period and 4-3 in the third.
