After a brutal incident Monday, tempers could be very high Wednesday night when the Washington Capitals visit the New York Rangers for the second game in a row. The Caps opened as short favourites on the NHL odds with a total of 5.5 goals.

Capitals vs. Rangers 5/5/21 Betting Analysis

Washington has clinched a playoff berth and is battling for the East Division title. The Rangers have been eliminated from the playoff contention. Wednesday is the final meeting of the season between the teams, and things could get ugly.

That’s because Capitals forward Tom Wilson, who has a history of dirty play and has been suspended numerous times, punched a defenseless Rangers player in Monday’s game and then body slammed Rangers star Artemi Panarin to the ice twice – Wilson is lucky Panarin wasn’t seriously injured, but his season is reportedly over.

There’s no question that Wilson will be suspended the rest of the regular season – if the NHL lets him play Wednesday, there might be anarchy on the ice as the Rangers try to retaliate — and into the playoffs. That would be a loss for the Caps as the Toronto native is a good player when under control with 13 goals and 20 assists this season.

The Rangers lead the season series 4-3. The under hit in the first four and the over has the previous four.

Washington Capitals

The Caps ended a two-game losing streak with Monday’s 6-3, win and they close the season after Wednesday with three at home (vs. Philadelphia and Boston). Vitek Vanecek stopped 23 of 26 shots Monday, and he has been one of the top rookies in the NHL this year. The Caps often rotate on a game-by-game basis between Vanecek and Ilya Samsonov. Tom Wilson did have a goal and assist Monday before all the shenanigans. Superstar Alex Ovechkin returned after missing four games with a lower-body injury but only lasted 39 seconds before leaving. Washington’s captain remains one goal from tying Marcel Dionne for fifth on the NHL’s career list. Here’s guessing the Russian is shut down until the playoffs. Ovi leads the team with 24 goals. Top blueliner John Carlson returned from his own lower-body injury Monday.

New York Rangers

The Rangers are the only NHL team that has five players with at least 44 points and one of just two teams with three players who have 20 or more goals, but they were eliminated from playoff contention with Monday’s loss. Mika Zibanejad had two goals in the loss and leads the team with 22. Igor Shesterkin stopped 34 of 39 shots. He has a 15-13-3 record with a 2.53 goals-against-average and a .918 save percentage in 2021 and is the team’s future in net. Winger Chris Kreider and top blueliner Jacob Trouba both missed Monday’s game. Kreider is tied for second on the team with 20 goals. Really no point in allowing any banged-up players to return this year.
