Toronto’s looking to get back into the win column without Auston Matthews, who is out a minimum of three weeks with a sprained knee.

At 30-12-8 the Leafs have a slight lead on second in the Atlantic Division, but Tampa Bay is closing in. Washington’s currently in the top Wild-Card spot with 58 points, but also have several teams hot on their tail as the games become more and more important.

Puck drop at Scotiabank Arena is at 5 p.m. EST, with Toronto a -132 moneyline favourite on home ice and the total set at six on the NHL odds.

Capitals vs. Maple Leafs NHL Betting Odds

Scotiabank Arena has been tough on many visitors, with Toronto losing just four home games in regulation through 27 home games. Washington enters this tilt on a roll though, winning nine of their last 12 road games. The over has connected in 10 of the last 14 Capitals–Leafs meetings played in Toronto. This goes against the Leafs home trend overall though, with 17 of Toronto’s 27 home games this season going under.

The Leafs have taken four of their last five meetings with the Caps. Sunday’s contest is for the season series, with each club winning one of these teams’ two matchups this season. The home team is 2-0 in those contests.

Washington Capitals

The Capitals got a much-needed win the last time they took the ice, defeating Pittsburgh 3-2 in a shootout on Thursday. Alex Ovechkin scored his team-leading 32nd goal of the year in the win, which now has him at 812 in his career.

Darcy Kuemper earned first star honours with 35 saves and picked up his 15th win of the year.Kuemper has started Washington’s last four games, putting him at 33 games this season. He’s been the better of the Caps two goalies with a .917 save percentage on the year. Washington remains a top-10 team in goals allowed, sitting 10th in the league with 2.78 allowed per game

Toronto Maple Leafs

The Leafs suffered a rare home loss on Friday night, falling 6-2 to their provincial rival Ottawa in Toronto’s first game without Matthews. Ilya Samsonov made his sixth straight appearance in net but experienced a tough outing with six goals allowed on 34 shots. Samsonov is still 16-5-2 on the season with a .916 save percentage.

William Nylander scored his team-leading 27th goal in the loss and remains tied with Mitch Marner for the team lead in points with 58. Nylander now has a six-game point streak and six goals and 10 assists in the month of January. Marner also has 16 points this month, and both will be relied on even more with Matthews out.
