San Jose has won just two of their past 10 games as they continue their fall in the NHL’s overall standings. Montreal has slid into seventh in the Atlantic, due to their recent struggles after opening the new year as the hottest team in the league.

The NHL odds have the Canadiens as a slight -165 favourite at home, with the total opening at an even 6.0 goals. The puck will drop from the SAP Center in California at 10:30 p.m. ET.

Canadiens vs. Sharks NHL Betting Odds

This will be the first meeting of the season between the struggling Sharks and the slumping Canadiens, who will wrap up their season series later this month. They have split the season series in each of the past three seasons, but the road team has posted a perfect 6-0 record over that span. This matchup tends to be low scoring, hitting the UNDER in nine of their past 10.

The two most electrifying rookies in the league will face off for the first time since last year’s World Junior Championship. The Sharks’ Macklin Celebrini (-170) and Montreal’s Lane Hutson (+170) are the two favourites for the Calder trophy on our NHL futures board.

The Habs have been having trouble putting the puck in the net as of late, potting a total of just three goals over their past three games. The offensive slump has dropped their record on the OVER/UNDER to 24-23-5 with three straight games to the UNDER. Montreal has been a solid bet to cover the spread this season, going 30-22 to this point. They have only covered once over their current five-game slide though.

San Jose’s 32 covers this season is the second-most in the entire league but poor play over their past 10 has them only covering three times. The Sharks have a knack for giving up goals recently, allowing six or more in five of their past six games. In each of those contests, they played the OVER bringing them to 25-26-3 on the year.

Montreal Canadiens

Opening their three-game California road trip on Sunday afternoon in Anaheim versus the Ducks looked promising for a Canadiens team that had lost their past four games. They opened the scoring midway through the third with a shorthanded goal from Joel Armia (9) and their special teams kept rolling, with a power play goal from Christian Dvorak (5) just minutes later to take a 2-0 lead.

It went downhill from there as the Ducks scored two in the second to tie it, before notching a third straight in the final period to take the 3-2 win.

Tough night at the office for the Habs’ second line, as Patrik Laine, Kirby Dach and Alex Newhook all found themselves sitting on the bench for most of the third period. Laine played just one 32-second shift in the final frame before being planted in the middle of the bench for the final 13 minutes of the game.

Goaltender Sam Montembeault stopped just 19 of 22 shots in the game and the team will likely shift to rookie Jakub Dobes for Tuesday’s game.

San Jose Sharks

The Sharks are returning to action after a four-day break, being out of action since Thursday’s 6-2 beating from the Seattle Kraken. The Sharks fell behind early in the first, but a goal from Carl Grundstrum (2) tied the game before the intermission. The wheels fell off for San Jose in the second period, where they gave up four goals in under six minutes, giving themselves no chance for a comeback. Each team scored another in the third for the 6-2 final, handing the Sharks their 17th loss in their past 22 games.

GM Mike Grier caught the trade bug that has been moving around the Western Conference, moving two veterans to help rebuild his squad. The team’s leading scorer, Mikael Granlund (45 points) and defenceman Cody Ceci, were shipped off to Dallas for a pair of draft picks. Not only will the Sharks miss Granlund’s offence but he also chipped in on the penalty kill and averaged over 20 minutes per game, most among Sharks forwards.
