The Montreal Canadiens are now at a crossroads of their unexpectedly competitive 2024-25 campaign. While still in the hunt for a playoff spot, they’ve had a rough go as of late and need to bounce back against a vulnerable Anaheim Ducks outfit. Both squads were last in action on Thursday. Montreal hosted the Minnesota Wild and fell 4-0, whereas Anaheim visited the Calgary Flames and dropped the match 4-1.

Canadiens vs. Ducks NHL Betting Odds

It’s been mostly happy days for the Canadiens when they’ve met the Ducks at centre ice. The club from La Belle Province is riding a three-game winning streak over their feathered foes, dating back to November 2023. There has already been one meeting this season. That was in early December when the Habs plucked Anaheim 3-2 via the shootout.

For that matter. Martin St. Louis’ and his group will hope that contending with the Ducks reinvigorates their season. The team has now lost four in a row, albeit once in overtime. What’s more, the attack has gotten progressively worse as the losing streak stretches, having scored only once versus the Winnipeg Jets on Tuesday and getting blanked by the Wild on Thursday. Injuries are rearing their ugly heads as well, with Emil Heineman (upper body) and Kaiden Guhle (lower body) banged up.

As for Anaheim, it’s another rebuilding season. They’re next-to-last in the Pacific Division with only 47 points and sport an alarming minus-31 goal differential. About the only thing that can inspire confidence these days with the Ducks is that they fair well versus the puckline, judging by the 33-18-0 tally. Unlike Montreal, who has two players in he NHL top 50 in scoring (Nick Suzuki and Cole Caufield), the Ducks have none.

Montreal Canadiens

With a franchise as old as this one, there is no shortage of iconic, story time-worthy moments. Some are inspired by wins, others by defeats, and still other by ‘’in the moment’’ occasions.

Such was the case on Thursday after the final siren rung to conclude Montreal’s frustrating 4-0 defeat to the visiting Minnesota Wild on Thursday at the Bell Centre. It wasn’t that they had lost, but more so that local veteran Marc-André Fleury had shut them out. Seeing as this was most likely his final NHL game in Montreal, the fans gave him an ovation and the Canadiens players shook his hand afterwards. Classy.

As for the hockey reality of the situation, it was a game Montreal needed and they fired blanks. Unlikely candidate Josh Anderson led the way with five attempts, followed by Lane Hutson’s three. That said, as a unit, they only sent 19 pucks at Fleury, which usually won’t get the job done anyway.

Lastly, for as impressive as netminder Jakub Dobes has been since December, reality is setting in. He’s coughed up at least three goals in each of his last three starts.

Anaheim Ducks

The Ducks have had an up-and-down week. On Tuesday they were in Seattle to battle the Kraken, a club they’re trying to overtake in the Pacific, and won 6-4. But momentum is a fickle thing, and they crashed in Calgary on Thursday.

Anaheim was first to net too, as Frank Vatrano sniped a shot whilst killing a penalty in the first period. In fact, the first period suggested it was going to be Anaheim’s night, but the tide turned in the middle frame through two Flames goals. An unfortunate bounce that made goalie John Gibson look silly in the third period led to Calgary’s third goal and effectively put the match out of reach for the visitors and they fell 4-1.

Troy Terry is the Ducks’ leading goal scorer (16), but has netted only once in six games.
