Outside of the Hart Trophy, the Art Ross is arguably the most impressive individual NHL player award as the league’s top point producer during the regular season.

At just 29-years-old, Edmonton Oilers captain (and reigning winner) Connor McDavid is already tied with Gordie Howe and Mario Lemieux for the second-most career Art Ross Trophy wins with six apiece.

And to no one’s surprise, McDavid is the early favourite to win the Art Ross again this season, with Nikita Kucherov and Nathan MacKinnon rounding out the top three.

Let’s get back into some NHL futures talk with the Art Ross Trophy favourites, a prediction and some betting trends.

Art Ross Trophy favourites

The early Art Ross Trophy race is fairly top-heavy with a sizeable gap between the top three favourites of McDavid (+210), Kucherov (+270) and MacKinnon (+310).

It’s a no-brainer to see McDavid the favourite to win this award, just like he will be favoured next year and the year after. He’s averaging just under 130 points per season over the last five years and I actually think the fact that Edmonton is a weaker team on paper helps his case. McDavid and Leon Draisaitl will need to drag this team forward by themselves, so the video game stats should follow.

Kucherov has won almost everything you can win in hockey, including three Art Ross Trophies (2019, 2024, 2025). The Lightning winger is one of the most low-key stars in the game and he’s made his living as a setup man, producing 353 assists over the last four years (88.25 average per season). It also doesn’t hurt that the 33-year-old has plenty of motivation in a contract year as he looks to cash in on what will likely be the last major deal of his career.

MacKinnon finished third in league scoring last year and second in the previous two seasons. It just feels like a matter of time until the Dogg wins an Art Ross and this year sets up well for him. The Avalanche are poised to be one of the highest scoring teams in the NHL once again and the former 140-point player is a major reason why. It’s early, but MacKinnon already has multi-point performances in Colorado’s first two games of the season.

Here’s the top-10 favourites to win the Art Ross Trophy this season:

  1. Connor McDavid (+210)
  2. Nikita Kucherov (+270)
  3. Nathan MacKinnon (+310)
  4. Macklin Celebrini (+800)
  5. Leon Draisaitl (+1000)
  6. David Pastrnak (+2000)
  7. Kirill Kaprizov (+3000)
  8. Nick Suzuki (+3000)
  9. Jack Eichel (+3500)
  10. Jason Robertson (+3500)

Art Ross Trophy prediction

McDavid, Kucherov and MacKinnon are all great options to take for the Art Ross this season and if they remain healthy, they should each finish top-five in scoring. However, they’ve basically been the only options for the last three years and the parity in the NHL just won’t let that contnue.

That’s why I love the value of McDavid’s Oilers teammate, Leon Draisaitl, at +1000. When healthy, Draisaitl is clearly as dangerous as McDavid and when the duo is split up, Draisaitl generally draws the easier matchups, so he’ll have more opportunities to produce.

I’m also looking at Draisaitl’s versatility. The German sniper can score and set plays up. He has four 50-goal seasons under his belt and he’s also finished with 60 or more assists four times.

This Edmonton roster has taken a step back from their back-to-back Stanley Cup FInal runs, but Draisaitl remains as dominant as ever and he’ll be a major reason they make it back to the playoffs this season.

Art Ross Trophy betting trends

  • Historic award: The Art Ross Trophy has been award 71 times to 29 players since its inception for the 1947-48 season.
  • Gretzky greatness: Wayne Gretzky has won the most Art Ross’ with 10, including seven straight from1980-81 to 1986-87. Connor McDavid, Mario Lemeiux and Gordie Howe are tied for second with six wins each.
  • Two decades of dominance: Three players completely shut out the rest of the league over a 20-year period, with one of only Gretzky, Lemiuex or Jaromir Jagr winning the Art Ross from 1981 to 2001.
  • Make way for the young guns: Only two players over the age of 30 have won the Art Ross since 1998 – Martin St. Louis at 37 with Tampa Bay in 2012-13 and Nikita Kucherov, also with Tampa, at 31 in 2024-25.
  • No ties: Unlike the Rocket Richard Trophy, only one player each season can be the official Art Ross Trophy winner. If two or more players finish the season tied in points, the tiebreakers go 1.) player with most goals, 2.) player with fewest games played, 3.) player who scored first goal of the season.
