NFL Week 10 Point Spread and Betting Analysis

Washington is in the NFC East and Detroit the NFC North, but it sure feels like these clubs play every year – Washington leads all-time 31-14 including playoffs. It hasn’t won in Detroit since 2008, however.

Last season in Maryland, Washington was a 19-16 winner. Dustin Hopkins hit the tying 42-yard field goal with 1:49 remaining and the winner from 39 yards with 16 seconds to go. He’s still with Washington. Then-rookie quarterback Dwayne Haskins wasn’t very good in completing just 13 of 29 for 156 yards with a pick.

Detroit was without starting quarterback and former No. 1 overall pick Matthew Stafford and might be again here (more on that below). Jeff Driskel threw for 207 yards and a score but also three picks. The last one helped set up the winning field goal for Washington.

The home team is 4-1 against the spread in the past five meetings.

Washington Football Team

Washington fell to 2-6 with Sunday’s 23-20 home loss to the New York Giants but is still very much alive in the NFC East race. Haskins began the year as the starting QB but was benched by new coach Ron Rivera early on. Kyle Allen had been starting but suffered a gruesome ankle injury in Sunday’s loss and his season is expected to be finished.

That means Alex Smith will start this one and it will be his first start since Nov. 18, 2018, when he suffered a broken fibula and tibia in his right leg in one of the most gruesome injuries in league history. Smith was 24-for-32 for 325 yards with a TD and three picks in relief of Allen vs. New York. Haskins will be the No. 2.

Detroit Lions

Will Stafford be able to play? He was placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list early last week but was cleared in time to suit up for Sunday’s 34-20 loss in Minnesota. He completed 23 of 32 passes for 211 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions before leaving to be checked for a concussion in the fourth quarter. Stafford apparently did clear the protocol after the game so he probably will be good to go. If for some reason he can’t, it would be journeyman Chase Daniel.

Pro Bowl receiver Kenny Golladay sat with a hip injury and isn’t likely to be back for this one. Detroit’s defence was gashed for 275 yards rushing in the loss – Coach Matt Patricia will not be back in 2020 and could be fired immediately if the Lions lose this one.
