Thursday Night Football Point Spread and Betting Analysis
Neither club has a shot at the playoffs but perhaps the No. 1 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft – especially the horrid Jets. Coach Adam Gase is being crucified daily in the New York tabloids. Gase will not be around much longer. He became a rising star in the coaching industry as Denver’s offensive coordinator from 2013-14. It “somewhat” helped Gase that those two excellent teams had Peyton Manning at quarterback.
Denver’s three-game winning streak both straight up and against the spread in this series ended in the most recent meeting, a 34-16 Jets home victory in Week 5 of 2018. New York had one of the best rushing games in franchise history with 323 yards (No. 2 in Jets history) on 38 carries. Isaiah Crowell (now out of NFL) had a team-record 219 yards. Sam Darnold added three TD passes. Case Keenum (now with the Browns) threw for 377 yards and two TDs in the loss.
The Broncos are 5-2 against the spread in the past seven meetings. The over is 4-1 in the previous five at the Jets.
Denver Broncos
Denver was very competitive in its first two losses this season but not much Sunday in a 28-10 home defeat to Tampa Bay. Starting Broncos QB Drew Lock missed the game due to injury and will not play here, either. Journeyman Jeff Driskel was 17-for-30 for 176 yards with a TD and pick in his place. Driskel was benched in the fourth quarter for Brett Rypien in his first NFL action. Don’t be surprised if he starts this one. At 0-3, might as well see what Rypien offers.
Coach Vic Fangio will name a starter Tuesday and mentioned both could play. The Broncos have been destroyed by injuries this season and suffered another Sunday as defensive tackle Jurell Casey reportedly tore his biceps and will be done for the year. Denver is 10-3 ATS in its past 13 Thursday games.
New York Jets
If the Jets lose here, this writer believes Gase will be fired. They have been less competitive by the week, getting blasted 36-7 at Indianapolis on Sunday. Third-year QB Sam Darnold, the No. 3 overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, looks completely lost. He was picked off three times vs. Indy (two returned for touchdowns), and Darnold’s rating of 70.7 is third-worst in the league.
Starting receivers Breshad Perriman and Jamison Crowder missed the game due to injury as did offensive tackle George Fant. First-round rookie offensive tackle Mekhi Becton, linebacker Jordan Willis and safety Bradley McDougald each left injured. New York is 4-1 ATS in its past five as a home dog.
