Titans vs. Lions Point Spread: NFL Week 8 Odds, Prediction
These teams enter Week 8 with opposite records. The Lions improved to 5-1 with a 31-29 win against the previously unbeaten Minnesota Vikings last week, while the Titans were blown out 34-10 in Buffalo.
Detroit opened as a massive 11.5-point favourite to win on the NFL odds, with the total set at 46.5.
NFL Point Spread and Betting Analysis
Detroit and Tennessee have only met four times since 2008, with the Titans claiming victory in each game. This will be the first head-to-head since Tennessee’s 46-25 Week 15 win in the 2020 season. Both rosters are almost completely different, so you can throw that game out the window when looking ahead to this week.
Only one of these teams has rewarded bettors this year and you can probably guess which one it is. While the Lions have been one of the most profitable teams in the NFL at 5-1 against the spread, the Titans have been a terrible cover option at 1-5 ATS. Ironically, however, Tennessee has covered in five straight games against Detroit.
Both teams have hit the Over in three of six games in 2024. The Over has also hit in six of the last nine head-to-heads.
A couple trends point to the Lions being the play on the moneyline. First, Detroit is 6-1 straight up in their last seven home games. Second, and probably more telling, is the fact Tennessee has lost 12 of their last 14 road games.
Tennessee Titans
Mason Rudolph took over starting duties for the injured Will Levis last week. In Rudolph’s first start of the season, he completed just 25 of 40 pass attempts for 215 yards, one touchdown, one interception and one lost fumble. Chigoziem Okonkwo led all Titans receivers with 50 yards in the air, while Nick Westbrook-Ikhine had the lone receiving TD. Tony Pollard finished with a team-high 61 rushing yards. Tennessee actually went up 10-0 early in the second quarter, but gave up 34 unanswered points to end the game.
The big thing to watch for the Titans is obviously the status of Levis, who suffered a shoulder injury in Week 4. Levis had time to heal with a Week 5 bye and he played Week 6, so it was a bit of surprise he wasn’t in the lineup against the Bills. Following the loss to Buffalo, Tennessee head coach Brian Callahan described Levis as “week-to-week”, so it’s hard to get a grasp on how close he is to returning. While Rudolph was far from impressive last week, Levis hasn’t been much better as he’s averaging just 139.8 passing yards per game this season and he has a negative 5-7 TD-INT ratio. Regardless of who starts under centre, the Titans are in trouble.
Detroit Lions
The Lions received a huge boost to their hopes of winning a second straight NFC North title with last week’s statement win against Minnesota. The entire offence clicked, led by Jared Goff, who completed 22 of 25 pass attempts for 280 yards and two TDs. Amon-Ra St. Brown was Goff’s favourite target, hauling in eight passes for 112 receiving yards and a touchdown. Jahmyr Gibbs had a monster performance, putting up a season-high 116 rushing yards and two TDs while adding another 44 receiving yards.
When Detroit returns to the field on Sunday, they’re expected to do so without receiver Jameson Williams, who is facing a two-game suspension for violating the NFL’s policy on performance enhancing substances. It’s definitely a blow to the Lions as Williams is having a breakout year and he’s been a deep threat that dictates how opposing defences approach coverage. Williams is second on Detroit in both receiving yards (361) and receiving TDs (three).
