Think the Tennessee Titans are pretenders rather than contenders? You certainly aren’t alone. The Titans remain very much in the hunt for the AFC South title, but find themselves as slight underdogs for Sunday’s encounter with a host San Francisco team that didn’t win its first game this season until mid-November.

NFL Point Spread and Betting Analysis

This marks the first time all season that San Francisco has been the favourite – and given that they’ve failed to cover in four of the last six games, all as an underdog, there might not be much reason for optimism. Also working against the 49ers: they’ve covered just three times in their previous 13 home games. But Tennessee has been equally as disappointing on the road, going just 7-20 ATS in their last 27 contests outside Nashville.

Confused? So is everyone else; bettors are almost completely split in this one, with 51 percent of Sports Interaction participants leaning toward the 49ers. The consensus is much stronger with regard to the total, with 75 percent of bettors going with the under-44 option. That goes along with the main trends for both teams; Tennessee has gone under the total in four of its five road games, while San Francisco is is 1-5 O/U in its previous six games overall.

Tennessee Titans

The Titans received some positive news earlier this week with word that quarterback Marcus Mariota only suffered a slight knee sprain in the loss to the Cardinals and is expected to suit up this week. It would be better news, however, if Tennessee knew it was getting last year’s version of Mariota instead. He has just 10 touchdown passes on the season; the Titans are 5-3-1 ATS and 6-3 O/U in games in which Mariota throws for at least one TD.

San Francisco 49ers

Defence has been the catalyst for San Francisco’s turnaround; it has allowed 24 or fewer points in each of its last four games, including 30 total points in road wins over Chicago and Houston. Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo is also showing signs of building chemistry with the offence, throwing for 627 yards over his past two games. The former New England Patriots backup only has two TD passes through three full games, but is showing signs a breakout is imminent.
