Texans vs. Titans NFL Week 5 Betting Odds, Picks: Houston favoured in AFC South battle

Add Sports Interacton as Your Preferred News Source

Week 5 brings a meeting of winless AFC South rivals in Nashville, and the Houston Texans are the bigger surprise. Houston made the playoffs last season, but have lost all four games this term by 14 points or fewer, three in the final two minutes.

The Buffalo Bills scored the winning touchdown with 1:41 left in the opener, the Indianapolis Colts kicked a 53-yard field goal with 21 seconds remaining in Week 3, and CeeDee Lamb’s 12-yard touchdown with under a minute left capped a Dallas Cowboys comeback from a 16-6 halftime deficit last Sunday.

The Tennessee Titans are also 0-4, but Robert Saleh’s team has been more competitive than its record suggests. Tennessee led the Philadelphia Eagles until the final seconds in Week 2, lost 12-7 to the New York Giants, and pulled within 24-18 in Baltimore on a late Cam Ward touchdown pass. Now the Titans get a home date with a Houston team that has the same record but far more talent.

Houston is a 7.5-point favourite to win on the NFL odds, with the total pegged at 37.5.

NFL Betting Odds, Point Spread, Trends

Houston opened as a 6.5-point road favourite, and the line has crept up to over a touchdown. The Texans are -7.5 (-105) with a -360 moneyline price, while Tennessee sits at +275 as the home underdog. The Over/Under is 37.5, with both sides priced at -110; the total opened at 39.5.

Despite the number, backing Houston has been a losing proposition. The Texans are 0-4 against the spread this season, while Tennessee is 2-2 ATS and the Under is 3-1 in its games. Houston has won the last three meetings between these AFC South rivals, and the all-time series is tied 24-24.

NFL Player Odds and Props

Tennessee Titans

Rookie WR Carnell Tate broke out in Baltimore, catching nine passes for 145 yards, and the rookie has quickly become one of Ward’s most dangerous targets. RB Tony Pollard punched in a three-yard touchdown run against the Ravens, and his odds of finding the endzone this week sit at +210.

Houston Texans

WR Nico Collins missed two games with a hamstring injury, but he returned against Dallas with seven catches for 118 yards and two touchdowns. He now has 14 catches for 193 yards and three scores in two games, and his +120 anytime TD price is worth a look against a Titans defence that ranks 25th in yards allowed per play.

Houston Texans

DeMeco Ryans’ team keeps finding ways to lose late. QB C.J. Stroud ranks fifth in the league with 1,141 passing yards and has thrown five touchdowns without an interception, including 347 yards against Dallas. The problem is balance, as the Texans are averaging just 79 rushing yards per game.

The defence has been the bigger shock. Houston is allowing 27.3 points per game after giving up 17.3 per game last season, and Dak Prescott threw for 248 yards in the second half on Sunday. Ryans admitted his team “did not do our coverages properly” after halftime. LB Azeez Al-Shaair (groin) missed the Dallas game, and WR Tank Dell remains on injured reserve.

Tennessee Titans

Saleh’s team has lost its four games by an average of 7.0 points, but the offence remains the issue. Tennessee is averaging just 13.8 points per game and ranks second-to-last in total yards per game. Ward has thrown for 726 yards with three touchdowns and two interceptions, and the Titans came away empty on a first-and-goal from the Ravens’ eight-yard line last week.

The defence has kept Tennessee in games, allowing 20.8 points per game, and it held Derrick Henry to 73 yards on 23 carries on Sunday. Saleh said Monday that his team “should be healthy and ready to roll for Houston.”
