The Houston Texans and the Green Bay Packers face off in their first exhibition game of the 2021 NFL pre-season on Saturday.
Houston and Green Bay are two teams headed in completely different directions at the moment. The Texans ended last season with a 4-12 record, while the Packers finished 13-3 and lost in the NFC Championship game.
Houston appears to be in the midst of a roster rebuild, so this pre-season game could offer them a lot of insight into their currently constructed roster. Green Bay, on the other hand, will be looking to see if their depth is strong enough to make another run at the Super Bowl.
Green Bay is a 3-point favourite to win on the NFL pre-season odds, with a total of 33.5.
NFL Point Spread and Betting Analysis
We don’t have a ton of pre-season intel to work with when it comes to these two teams and coaches. The Texans have a new sideline boss in David Culley, who has never been a head coach before. Meanwhile, the Packers are just 2-2 in Matt LaFleur’s lone pre-season action.
Houston Texans
Houston has a load of questions to answer before they are prepared for the start of the regular season. First of all, it is yet to be known if their superstar quarterback Deshaun Watson will be getting any playing time or if he – or the team – even wants any. He has been at training camp but there is a lot to unpack regarding his pending legal allegations and his trade request. Behind him, the team will be looking at rookie Davis Mills and Tyrod Taylor, which isn’t a terrible rotation. Mills has looked shaky in training camp, though. Meanwhile, Taylor is a seasoned veteran who should have no problem moving the ball against Packers backups. Jeff Driskel could also see time. He does have some NFL experience but he wasn’t very effective.
If you’re betting the Texans, you’re hanging your hat on their backfield. They have Mark Ingram, David Johnson, Phillip Lindsay, Rex Burkhead and Dontrel Hilliard, which is a very deep rotation. That group will have to power this team to a win.
Green Bay Packers
We might get to see both Aaron Rodgers and Davante Adams at the start of this contest but there is no way they see the field longer than the first possession. They might not even play that. That means we have to look at the depth chart here.
Green Bay will be taking a hard look at their backups offensively – especially given that Rodgers could be on his way out at some point and Adams won’t sign an extension right now. Jordan Love has yet to show why he was selected in the first round back in the 2020 NFL Draft but will likely get a good amount of playing time in this game. Newly drafted receiver, Amari Rodgers, will also hit the field here. At running back, the Packers have Aaron Jones, A.J. Dillon and rookie Kylin Hill, but we probably won’t seem much of Jones in Week 1 of the pre-season.
