What is an Octopus Bet?

NHL fans have their own octopus tradition, but an NFL octopus has nothing to do with the Detroit Red Wings. Sports Illustrated writer Mitch Goldich coined the term ‘octopus’ in 2019. An octopus refers to the same football player scoring a touchdown and immediately converting the two-point play. It’s a fairly rare occurrence as the team has to decide to go for two points, they have to be successful and the same player who scored the touchdown has to be the player to make the two-point conversion. An octopus has happened just 175 times since the NFL introduced the two-point conversion in 1994.

Super Bowl 58 Octopus

Two players suiting up for Super Bowl 58 have a history of recording an octopus. Kansas City quarterback Patrick Mahomes scored his octopus in a 20-17 overtime win against the Tennessee Titans in Week 9 of the 2022 season. San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey recorded his eight-point play as a member of the Carolina Panthers in Week 8 of the 2019 season. Ironically, McCaffrey’s octopus came against the 49ers in a 51-13 blowout loss. Mahomes and McCaffrey each ran in their octopus TDs and two-point conversions.

So, what do the stats say? in 272 regular season NFL games this year, there were 11 octopi recorded. That works out to roughly 4.044 per cent chance of seeing an octopus. Still, +1400 for an octopus in Super Bowl 58 is pretty good value when you consider Super Bowls are often very close games and close games lead to a higher chance of teams going for the two-point conversion. And, you don’t have to look far for recent Super Bowl octopus history. Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts recorded the first octopus in Super Bowl betting history just last year.

While you might be more likely to see an octopus at Detroit’s Little Caesars Arena, the potential return on a Super Bowl 58 octopus bet could make the risk worthwhile.
