The Pittsburgh Steelers will visit the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday in a game where one team will be trying and one team will be resting their starters. The Steelers need a win and some help with a loss from the Tennessee Titans to make the playoffs. Meanwhile, the Ravens have already clinched the top spot in the AFC and have announced that they’ll rest Lamar Jackson along with other key members. Does that mean that this sets up for an easy Steelers win?

NFL Point Spread and Betting Analysis

Pittsburgh has been absolutely dominant at the back ends of regular seasons since Mike Tomlin took over as head coach. Over the past 10 years, the Steelers are 17-4 straight up in games that are played in either Week 16 or 17 – and that is after last week’s loss to the New York Jets. Pittsburgh has won four of the last six meetings between these teams. However, both teams look a lot different this season than they did in past years. The Steelers are 9-6 against the spread this season.

Meanwhile, Baltimore is also 9-6 against the spread, including a 3-4 ATS record at home this season. Overall, the Ravens are 6-1 straight up at M&T Bank Stadium. Baltimore is 10-1 straight up in its past 11 games this season. The Ravens are 6-0 ATS in their last six games against AFC opponents.

Pittsburgh Steelers

Pittsburgh is actually 11-1 in Week 17 games in the Mike Tomlin era. In order to add to that win total, they will have to do something that 11 straight teams have failed to do: beat Baltimore. The Steelers took the Ravens to overtime at home in Week 5 before a JuJu Smith-Schuster fumble led to a game-winning field goal in the extra frame. Smith-Schuster took accountability for last week’s loss to the Jets after failing to convert a late fourth down in the red zone. However, the entire Steelers offense has been a mess this season.

With Mason Rudolph sidelined because of a shoulder injury, it will be on Devlin Hodges to deliver in Baltimore this weekend. Hodges was pulled in the loss to New York before Rudolph went down, returning to go 11-of-17 for 84 yards and two interceptions. With so many injuries on both sides of the football, the Steelers will be tough to rally on the road with Hodges at quarterback regardless of who is in the lineup for the Ravens this week.

Baltimore Ravens

Baltimore is coming off another statement 31-15 win over the Cleveland Browns. Lamar Jackson continued to add to his MVP resume with 238 passing yards, three touchdown passes and an additional 103 yards on the ground. Jackson won’t play in Week 17, which means it will be Robert Griffin III getting the start. While the Ravens have nothing to gain in terms of the standings, they still have an opportunity to eliminate a division rival and stay sharp heading into a bye week. Running back Mark Ingram won’t play either because of a calf injury. Neither will star safety Earl Thomas. Remember that must-win doesn’t always mean will win in these situations.

Baltimore still has a capable running back tandem in Gus Edwards and Justice Hill. On defense, the unit has played its best football since cornerback Jimmy Smith returned and cornerback Marcus Peters was added via trade. They should be licking their chops at the opportunity to go up against Hodges, who has been turnover prone of late.

Remember that Pittsburgh needed a win in Week 17 last season against the Cincinnati Bengals and they barely scraped by 16-13. They need another win in this spot and the Ravens are resting starters but this will still be a fight.
