The Pittsburgh Steelers will be the first team to play two games this NFL pre-season as they visit the Philadelphia Eagles on Thursday night. The Eagles are 1-point favourites to win on the NFL pre-season odds with a total of 34.5.

NFL Point Spread and Betting Analysis

These state rivals play most pre-seasons but of course there wasn’t one in 2020. Pittsburgh has won six of the past 10 exhibition games against Philadelphia and gone 7-3 against the spread.

They did play in the 2020 regular season in the Steel City and the Steelers won 38-29 to cover a 7.5-point spread. Ben Roethlisberger threw for 239 yards and three touchdowns. Canadian wideout Chase Claypool, then a rookie, caught seven passes for 110 yards and three scores and also rushed for a score. Carson Wentz threw for 258 yards with two scores and two picks for the Eagles, but he was traded this off-season to the Indianapolis Colts. Miles Sanders rushed for two scores.

Pittsburgh coach Mike Tomlin is 32-23 straight up in his pre-season career and 27-27-1 against the spread. This is the head coaching debut of Philadelphia’s Nick Sirianni, a former Colts offensive coordinator.

Pittsburgh Steelers

The Steelers were 1-point favourites in last week’s Hall of Fame Game in Canton, Ohio, and we predicted a 20-17 victory over the Dallas Cowboys – Pittsburgh won 16-3. Many Steelers starters didn’t play, including QB Ben Roethlisberger. It’s not yet known if he will play here, but if so, it won’t be for long. Coach Mike Tomlin is still trying to pick a backup QB between Mason Rudolph (6-for-9, 84 yards, lost fumble vs. Dallas) and Dwayne Haskins (8-for-13, 54 yards) so they will again get most of the snaps. Star linebacker TJ Watt isn’t practicing with the team and won’t play because he wants a new contract. He was the 2020 NFL Defensive Player of the Year runner-up. Another linebacker, Devin Bush, is expected to play a bit. The former first-round pick tore his ACL in Week 6 last season.

Philadelphia Eagles

It’s hard to know how long the Eagles’ starters may play, if they even do, because we don’t have a background to go on for new head coach Nick Sirianni. He replaced the fired Doug Pederson after Philly was 4-11-1 last year. For sure, first-round rookie receiver DeVonta Smith, the Heisman winner last season at Alabama, will not play because he’s dealing with a knee injury. This writer would imagine that projected starting QB Jalen Hurts plays because he needs the reps and reportedly has not looked great at times in camp. Sirianni has yet to officially name his starting QB but if Hurts can’t beat out Joe Flacco, this team is doomed. There have been some Deshaun Watson trade rumours.
