The high flying Washington Commanders have scored an NFC-best 263 points this season, while the Pittsburgh Steelers have allowed just 119 points, the second-best mark in the NFL. Something has to give when these teams meet in Washington on Sunday.

Washington opened as a 2.5-point favourite to win on the NFL odds, with the total set at 44.5.

NFL Point Spread and Betting Analysis

These teams haven’t met since Week 13 of the 2020 season, back when Washington was known by the brilliant moniker, the “Football Team”. Well, the Football Team, Washington that is, won 23-17 in a battle between now retired quarterbacks Alex Smith and Ben Roethlisberger.

Looking at this year, both these teams have been fantastic for bettors. The Commanders are an NFL-best 7-1-1 against the spread, while the Steelers are close behind at 6-2 ATS. Both teams have covered in three straight games.

With Pittsburgh’s elite defence, it’s a little surprising to see they’ve hit the Over in three straight games, although they played the Under in four of their first five games of the season. It’s not surprising, however, to see Washington’s lethal offence hit the Over in six of nine games.

All the stats point to these being two top tier teams, just look at their records. The Commanders are a perfect 4-0 at home this season and the Steelers are 3-1 on the road. Which streak will break on Sunday?

Pittsburgh Steelers

Receiver Calvin Austin III was fantastic in Pittsburgh’s 26-18 win over the Giants before the Steelers’ Week 9 bye. In the Week 8 matchup, Austin put up a 73-yard punt return touchdown and finished with 54 receiving yards and a second 29-yard score. Quarterback Russell Wilson was effective, finishing with 278 passing yards and a TD. Najee Harris had a season-high 114 rushing yards, topping the 100-yard mark for the third straight game.

Pittsburgh’s bread and butter has always been, and remains, their defence. They’re particularly effective at stopping the run as they allow just 90.5 rushing yards per game, ranking fourth in the NFL. That could be key against a Washington offence that boasts the third-best rushing attack in the league.

Washington Commanders

The Commanders also earned a win against the Giants in their last game, taking down New York 27-22 last week. Rookie sensation Jayden Daniels had a great two-way performance with 209 passing yards, two passing TDs and 35 rushing yards. Daniels leads all rookies in passing yards (1,945), passing TDs (nine) and completion percentage (71.5) while throwing just two interceptions.

As good as their rookie quarterback has been, Washington’s elite ground attack is flying under the radar. They lead the league in rushing TDs (15) and they rank third in average rushing yards per game (163.9) thanks to the duo of Daniels (459 rushing yards, three TDs) and Brian Robinson Jr. (461 yards, two TDs). This game should come down to the Commanders ability or inability to find holes in Pittsburgh run defence.
