With Justin Fields at the helm in place of injured veteran quarterback Russell Wilson, the Steelers claimed their fourth win in their past five regular season games. Conversely, it was a tough NFL debut for rookie quarterback Bo Nix, who struggled to find a spark while leading the Broncos to a 26-20 loss in Seattle that marks their fifth defeat in seven games.

The Steelers arrive in Denver perched as 2.5-point road favourites on the NFL Week 2 odds. The Broncos are listed as +120 moneyline underdogs, and the total is pegged at just 36.5.

NFL Point Spread and Betting Analysis

Sunday afternoon’s matchup marks the Steelers’ first visit since 2018 and the first clash between these teams in three years. The Steelers have claimed the win in each of their past two meetings with Denver, capped by a 27-19 win as 1.5-point home underdogs in 2021 that snapped a six-game against the spread winless streak in head-to-head action. However, Pittsburgh has not strung together three straight wins over the Broncos since 1979.

The OVER has paid out in 13 of 18 head-to-head matchups since 1990, with these teams combining to score at least 40 points in nine of their past 11 clashes. Despite their ongoing struggles, the Broncos have been reliable at home, winning five of their past six games while going 4-2 against the spread and have gone 18-5 ATS in their past 23 when pegged as home dogs by three or fewer points, winning outright on 10 occasions. However, the Steelers have lost just twice in their past nine as road chalk.

Pittsburgh Steelers

The Steelers could once again turn to Justin Fields on Sunday. Russell Wilson remains hobbled by a calf injury that limited him at Wednesday practice and leaves him officially list as questionable. Fields turned in a familiar performance last week, compiling 156 passing yards and adding 57 rushing yards. However, Fields was unable to find the end zone, leaving the job of putting up points to kicker Chris Boswell, who was a perfect 6/6 on field goals. Fields has now failed to top 200 passing yards in four of his past five outings including his final four games with Chicago last season, tossing for just three TDs over that stretch. But a lack of passing offence is nothing new for the Steelers, who have now generated just three total scoring tosses over their past five games and just three total scoring runs in 10 September contests since 2020.

Denver Broncos

Bo Nix will be looking to hit the reset button on a forgettable NFL debut in last week’s loss to Seattle. In addition to mustering just 136 yards on 26/42 passing, Nix failed to find the end zone while tossing a pair of avoidable picks in the first half. The former Oregon Ducks star did manage to rebound in garbage time, orchestrating a 54-yard drive that culminated in the first scoring run of his NFL career. However, that marked the only instance after halftime that Denver drove into the Seahawks red zone while compiling just 231 total yards and committing three turnovers on the day. On a positive note, the Broncos are relatively healthy compared to the Steelers, but will need to be better in all situations to pull off the upset against the anemic, but stingy Steelers.
