Sunday afternoon’s matchup marks the third meeting between these teams since January 2022 and the Seahawks’ second regular season visit to Detroit in as many years.
Seattle has dominated in recent dates with the Lions, winning five straight and eight of nine while going 6-3 against the spread over that stretch. That includes last season’s thrilling 48-45 victory in Detroit while pegged as 3.5-point road underdogs. That marked the second straight high-scoring affair, with these teams scoring an average total of 86.5 points in those contests after engaging in low-scoring tilts in their three previous matchups.
Seattle Seahawks
After capturing headlines by unexpectedly opening last season on a 6-3 run, the Seahawks have steadily lost momentum during their current 3-7 SU slide. Scoring woes have plagued this team during their swoon, with the Seahawks mustering an average of just 16.8 points per game over their past six contests. The comeback story of the year last season, quarterback Geno Smith was largely ineffective against the Rams, going 16-for-26 for just 112 yards and one score while adding just six rushing yards.
Smith received little help from a Seahawks offensive line that allowed him to be sacked twice and hit seven times, raising concerns considering the headaches the Lions defense created for Patrick Mahomes in last week’s win. A lack of discipline was also a big problem in last week’s loss, with both DK Metcalf and Quandre Diggs taking needless penalties out of frustration.
Detroit Lions
The Lions rewarded their long-suffering fans with a character win in last week’s season opener versus KC. In a game that previous editions of this team would have wilted, the Lions overcame a fourth-quarter deficit during a minute-munching, 75-yard scoring drive, followed by a stellar defensive performance in the dying minutes to seal the win. Jared Goff led a coordinated Lions attack by tossing for 253 yards and one scoring pass to Amon-Ra St. Brown while David Montgomery tallied a game-high 74 rushing yards on 21 carries including the game-winning scoring run.
Unlike the Seahawks, who have been dealing with injury woes among their defensive corps all week, the Lions enter the weekend in reasonably good health. The exceptions include cornerback Emmanuel Moseley, who missed last week’s game with knee and hamstring injuries and offensive tackle Taylor Decker, who has been absent from practice this week with an ankle injury.
