The Saints and Panthers both have something big to play for here in week 15. The Saints want to be NFC hosts; the Panthers want to be in the post season. This is the first of two games for these divisional rivals, as the teams will also close out the regular season in New Orleans on December 30.

NFL Point Spread and Betting Analysis

Not only are the Saints tied for the best record in the NFL at 11-2 but one of the best against the spread as well at 10-3. It’ll be interesting to see if they can cover a touchdown against a desperate Panthers team needing a win to stay alive.

The Saints enter this game on a three game winning streak against the Panthers, and have won four out of the last five games played. They are also 4-0 ATS in the last four games in Carolina, and 4-0 ATS against teams with losing records.

These two teams have a tendency of putting up a lot of points head-to-head as seven of the last eight games played have gone over the number.

New Orleans Saints

The Saints enter week 15 already having the NFC South division firmly wrapped up with a five game lead over second place Carolina. Now, the team wants to make sure it has full home field advantage and the trip to the Super Bowl has to go through New Orleans.

Currently they are tied with the Rams for first overall in the conference, and hold the tie breaker from a week 9 victory over the Rams.

The Saints offence has made most of the headlines this season, but the defence has played well this year as well. Currently ranked 13th in total defence, the strength of the unit is the dominance of the rush defence, ranked first overall, allowing opponents an average of 77.6 yards per game. Also, the team has held their opponents to 17 or less points per game for a fifth straight game.

Carolina Panthers

This isn’t a typo – despite losing five games in a row entering this game with the Saints, the 6-7 Panthers still have a shot at a Wild Card spot in the NFC.

It’s been a difficult past month for the Panthers, in particular the last four games, as the Panthers lost all those games by a touchdown or less. The bad results start with the defence. Although they are ranked 17th in total defence, having given up the big play when it matters has effected them. During the losing streak, they have allowed 15 plays of 20 yards or more, and last week during a six-point loss to the Browns, they allowed three plays of 50 yards or more.

Speaking of the Browns game, it was the first game since week one that Quarterback Cam Newton did not throw a touchdown pass in a game. The offence is still ranked in the top 10 despite not having a receiver in the top 20, and it’s all about the play of Christian McCaffrey. McCaffrey is fifth in league rushing with 926 yards, and a duo threat with 86 receptions for 701 yards.

Tight end Ian Thomas had a career-best nine receptions for 77 yards last week while replacing Greg Olson as he heals an injury.
