Saints vs. Panthers Point Spread: NFL Week 2 Odds, Prediction
The Panthers are 3-point underdogs on the NFL odds.
NFL Point Spread and Betting Analysis
Saints-Panthers is the early Monday game in Week 2 and on ESPN – it will have the “B” team announcing, while Joe Buck and Troy Aikman will be in Pittsburgh for the ABC game featuring Browns at Steelers.
Both New Orleans and Carolina could win the NFC South this season. Not because either is all that great but because it only took an 8-9 record to win the South last year by Tampa Bay and now Tom Brady is retired.
Last season, the Panthers swept the Saints and covered the spread in both. It was a 22-14 final score in Charlotte in Week 3. The Saints didn’t score until the fourth quarter. The starting QBs that day were Jameis Winston and Baker Mayfield. Winston is now the backup in New Orleans behind Derek Carr, and Mayfield is now starting in Tampa.
New Orleans Saints
The Saints played without Pro Bowl running back Alvin Kamara in Week 1, and he’ll miss two more games suspended. The offence wasn’t nearly as sharp without him but did just enough to beat visiting Tennessee 16-15. Derek Carr threw for 305 yards, a TD and a pick in his New Orleans debut but was sacked four times. Carr’s 41-yard pass to Rashid Shaheed on third-and-6 in the final minutes helped New Orleans run out the clock. Chris Olave, a 2022 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year contender, led with eight catches for 112 yards. The Saints’ defence didn’t allow a TD, intercepted Ryan Tannehill three times, sacked him three times, and stopped Tennessee on 10 of 12 third down plays. Dating to last season, the Saints have held nine consecutive opponents to 20 points or fewer, tying a team record.
Carolina Panthers
Quarterbacks chosen No. 1 overall in the draft are now 0-14-1 in their past 15 NFL debuts after Bryce Young and the Panthers lost 24-10 in Atlanta on Sunday. The former Heisman Trophy winner from Alabama struggled behind a shaky offensive line, completing 20 of 38 for 146 yards and two picks. He averaged 3.8 yards per attempt on a day where none of his completions went farther than 14 yards. It didn’t help that projected No. 1 WR and deep threat DJ Chark was out injured; he might return for Week 2. Pro Bowl defensive end Brian Burns did play despite wanting a new contract and had 1.5 sacks and a forced fumble. It was an excellent effort overall for the defence as it held the Falcons to 221 total yards. Atlanta managed just 13 first downs and held to 2-of-10 on third downs. Cornerback Jaycee Horn, the No. 8 overall pick in the 2021 draft, will miss multiple weeks with a hamstring injury suffered in the loss.
